Lager side mounted intercoolers - Who's in ?

Post by dodgydave » Fri Feb 02, 2007 11:19 am

Guys,

I know MRC and a lot of other tuners have some great FMIC kits!

But to fit them properly you need to cut the bumper, loose your A/C fan, the headlamp washer and except a restricted airflow to the water radiator.

So, if you don’t want to be that invasive the only option is the Sportech ICs, which cost around £3,500.

Now, I just spoken to professional automotive radiator builder and he quoted me around £900 (inc. VAT) for a set of custom made ICs in the dimension of the sportec units. These guys are building radiators mainly for the motorsport industry.

I'm definitely going to get a set done but I wanted to see if anybody else is interested, which could bring the price down even more.

Also, has anybody the sportec units or just a picture of them fitted? Just to get an idea how much of a squeeze they are?

Cheers,
Dave

Looks good Dave, if I had the money. I have to say I got very excited when I read the subject title. Keeping my beer cool on long journey's has always been an issue for me .

Ok, so all I know is a better intercooler will give more power (20-30bhp), but -

Do the Sportech (or custom built) ones fit in the same space as the stock ones? Does this mean the gains won't be as good as a centre mounted one (otherwise why would anyone ever fit a centre one?) Is the likely gain around 20-30bhp? Does this also need a remamp to take advantage of the new intercooler, or would a MTM-3 map already handle it?

If we get the same gains for a c£900 intercooler that a £3,500 one gives, then I'd be interested...

Nick,

A FMIC will give you more gains than the side mounted but you have to compromise quite a few things. Also I personally don't like the look.

You can't put the gains in bhp. It all depends on your setup. But the custom once will give you more than the RS4 and the same or even more than the £3,500 sportech once. I'd guess they add somewhere around 5-8 % to your current power.

hope that helps.

Dave,

Ok, thanks. How long do they take to fit/how much cost? No matter how easy it is, I'd have to get a garage to do it...

But I'm very interested - I too don't like the front mounted ones, again purely from a looks point of view.

5-8% of 460 is 23-37bhp, which is great - is it spread across the range, or are the extra only at the top end?

You're looking at around 10-15bhp for uprated side mounts. The main problem is that they need new shrouds and it's vital that there is a good seal around the face of the IC.

Fitting is relatively straightforward, as they'll mate to the existing RS4 plumbing - just need to take the front bumper off.

BTW, these won't be suitable for S4's due to their extra size.

I think You (Dave) Nige and I should move this forward. I know there is a way we can do it together.
I'm in if Nige is in and we can get the shrouds. An exact copy size wise to sportec is the way to go (I hope)
And maybe better technology?

What do you think Nige?

Would you be willing to put forward a supplier to Dave and see if it is the same company?

I've aready posted on this - they only have around a 10% larger frontal area which is what is key for a good IC.

The IC's are not a problem - my car is booked in for the end of Feb as a mule!

Does anyone know of any fibreglass / carbon specialists who can make the ducts? Wasn't SimonMTM involved in carbon mfr????

The AWE pipes are a smaller diameter than std RS4, so not really an option for the RS4.
