RS2 running costs?

Hi folks.

I used to own an S2, but now have a BMW.
I've been thinking about changing it for an RS2, but am unsure of what it'll cost me.

Can you guys give me an idea of what sort of running costs I should expect from an RS2?
If I assume that I managed to get one that had been looked after... 100,000 miles... what would I be paying per year on maintainance?

I couldn't agree more - it is one of the most cared for RS2's I've ever seen.

I couldn't agree more - it is one of the most cared for and well maintained RS2's I've ever seen.

Yeah, but i'd be looking for a completely stock one.

I'm guessing a couple of grand a year on maintainance?

MRC remap is a significant improvement on the poor OEM map. As stock it uses gallons of fuel on cold start cycle and off boost with a conservative but steep boost curve. The primary concern with the stock map was to allow for all fuel grades in all conditions with varing customer car care.

I understand the reasons for seeking stock but the MRC remaps are the best around IMHO by utilising the motronic ecu/software to the full. You do need to use V power or the like but who would put standard unleaded in an RS2.

The last comment I will make is if you really want stock you will have to buy with care to avoid getting a 'chipped one'

Damn thats one fine Rs2, £6k he has spent, I have spent £4,3k on mine, darn now I have to spend some more to win ;) hehe
But when I look at the list that he has bought and replaced on the car makes me wounder, Is rs2 parts cheaper there then in Sweden?

I just stopped counting at £6K.
When I got my car the aim was to get it back to as new condition, therefore a lot of the bits most people would not have deemed necessary. I am a bit of a pefectionist when it comes to maintaining my car.

I'm not on a mission for more power, so the only advantage of a remap would be increased MPG.
What MPG should I expect with a remap, and how would it compare with stock MPG? (assuming I don't thrash the car around every corner and up every straight)
It'll cost me at least £500 more on insurance, will I see this saving with MPG increase?

So consensus (of 3) seems to suggest that annual spending will be between £4k5 and £6k per year.
Are these true 'per year' figures, or are these just what it takes to get your car up to scratch (then smaller cost per year thereafter)?

No it has been £6K over 3 years, so £2k a year. Not all of that work was absolutely necessary. You may have some quiet years costing very little. However, just having brake discs and pads alround together with new hand brake shoes could cost you almost £1k fitted together with a service. I think if you budgeted £1k a year that would be realistic.

Overall the MRC remap reduces mpg assuming you do not have a heavy foot. This is because the OEM off boost map is rich to cope with petrol grade variation.

My error I meant increases mpg...uses less fuel...too little sleep

The MRC remap does more than more power. Boost comes in earlier and stronger meaning in normal situations you are on boost for less time to achieve your goal. Unless Vmax is your aim :) In addition the off boost fuel map is leaner using less fuel. IMHO feels very similar to a fit stock RS4 B5.
The chips are identical to stock and show no error codes on Vagcom :wink:
Most who have had that remap will have the stock chips (I do)

MPG all round 20ish stock 22ish MRC remap BUT mpg is influenced by several items......lambda...driving style...the RS2 eats fuel cold in slow traffic (as per my daily commute)

Finally I think that the costs here come from those who have opted to fully sort the usual issues ASAP to enjoy the cars to the full. Hence my recommendation re Glynns car
