S4 K04 Conversion
Re: S4 K04 Conversion
btw, is this all part of your plan to beat your mate in his 993 ?
Re: S4 K04 Conversion
Beat him ?
Personally I was planning on severely embarrasing him
I was looking at going for an RS4 but what with moving house etc this year the funds were not there to do it, so
it seemed like the next best thing
If anyone is considering this mod I would have to say just get on and do it, it completly transforms the car - awesome.

Were your K03s on the way out or did you just fancy K04s?

Re: S4 K04 Conversion
can be a bit tricky in the wet though as mine is a pre traction control model.
I know the feeling - but that is just so much fun as you hit the apex with the car sitting just on the limit and then boot it coming out with a resultant tail out power slide.

Re: S4 K04 Conversion
Hi Dippy,
Congrats on the new job by the way, hope its going ok.
To be honest I had some bonus left and as we have just moved house I thought I better spend it now before the
wife got her hands on it
However once the K03's came out, one of them was on the way out. The thrust bearing was pretty Knackered so it seems my timing was about right.

Re: S4 K04 Conversion
Phil,
I read that the Audi exhaust manifolds are restrictive, and from what I've seen of engine diagrams, I can believe it. I don't know much about the AWE manifolds, but they're likely to be an improvement.
One thing is certain: If you're having new turbos fitted, then since the engine is being taken out it makes sense to uprate anything else that can be uprated only with the engine out (depending on funds of course). So this has to include:
Exhaust manifolds
Flywheel
Clutch (doesn't need engine out but easy to do when it is)
Heatshields (not so much uprating, but just make sure they are in good condition and secure)
Anyone think of anything else?

Re: S4 K04 Conversion
There is a little more lag than before the conversion, but this is easily removed by just making sure you are in the right gear and to be honest is minimal.
The flywheel does help to keep this to a minimum as everything spools up quicker.
The lighter flywheel is excellent but does give some extra 'mettalic' noise when pulling off at sub 2K revs due to their being less damping, it is not a dual mass flywheel.
I did consider the manifolds (as far as I know their are no mods done during the conversion) but the extra £1K was too much in my opinion.

Re: S4 K04 Conversion
If you do go for the conversion you also need to factor belt and roller changes. This is not too expensive (a lot cheaper than having it either a) fail or b) doing the job with the engine in the car) this adds a few hundred pounds.
Re the lag, the car will now outrun a 996 Carrera 2 2003MY from standing start to 120mph+ with ease, so it can't be too bad
