RNS-E no comms with VAG-Com

Post by tartan_rob » Tue Jan 09, 2007 11:00 am

Guys - I bought my car from a forum member and it is great. The Sat-Nav was retrofitted by Craig B and I have yet to mail him about this but when trying to connect to the sat-nav via VAG-COM, I get the error, "cannot communicate with module" (or similiar), the same error you get when trying to communicate with a module that is not there.

I have checked in the instrument channel (channel 62, +4 for Sat Nav)and the car is coded for Sat-Nav use and indeed all functions work okay. I am running VAG COM 409 or 411....

Anyone got any ideas?

Craigyb is on holiday for a few days so he won't reply as quickly as usual.

Have you tried a later version of VAG-COM?, other people have solved this problem just by using a genuine VAG-COM cable and the latest version (607.3) - craigyb would not have let an install go with this problem.

I saw this on a car recently and it appeared that it was caused by the original (non-plus) Nav unit still being connected. Both units try to respond at the same time, giving rise to comms errors. Can you access the RNS-E on the radio module address (56)? If so, use that - I believe that all functions can be accessed on either address.

Who's car was it?

I would not be stupid enough to leave both systems connected, maybe the switch is still in the console, but it is not connected. If it is the car I'm thinking of.

Hey, I have no idea who did the install, but it's on a B6S4. Address 37 was giving repeated comms errors whilst address 56 worked perfectly well, reporting that an A6 RNS-E was installed.

At one point I did get address 37 to connect and report a standard Nav installation.

Dave Barkers S4 is a B6 with the correct NAV system installed.

Maybe it is the VAG lead as I know it worked well when I used the genuine ross-tech lead.

Craig - it could well be that. Can I ask you what version of VAG com you used? I may have an old version that cannot communicate.

I use 607.3 with a genuine Hex-CAN lead

That maybe the issue. I'll get one ordered I think. My version is old 409 I think.
