K03 hybrid
Graham, I'm not missing Mark's point at all....I appreciate what he is saying but I have actually done it (not by choice or with full understanding of what I was being sold) not theorised about it I can say that it works...but you shouldn't do it because of long term effects. If you reduce the boost on a set of K04s to ensure that they do not run lean your down to K03 type power (presumably, I've never done it) and chances are you need a different map to run K04s at this boost as it's unlikely to work at all well on a "remapped K03" map or a standard map. The cost to run K04s at 320-340 is marginally less than the cost to run them at 400BHP....fuel pump and injectors aren't the major expense in this upgrade.
mint thread!! (this topic is at the back of everyones head ) nice to see some debate on a different way to solve a old problem
different angle though--
insurance is for KO3 not KO4 so just insure for remapped car (if your running legal of course)
and on resale the car looks less tampered with so easier to sell.
less cash overall
just my 2p

Got this reply from Jacob about running the K03/K04's on my car...
Just the turbo upgrade will net you around 15-20hp increase. The turbos are going to be more efficient, lowering IAT's.
-Increasing boost will increase hp. With stock injectors/MAF and 5bar fpr you can get to around 400bhp, that's the limit without upgrading all of the fueling components.
-To increase boost you can use an mbc.
-I can get you both the mbc and 5bar fpr. The mbc is going to be about $55 and a true 5bar fpr is around $250 i beleive.

This all sounds very good! Now if i can just get a reasonable quote for an engine-in-situ turbo swap-out ...Just the turbo upgrade will net you around 15-20hp increase. The turbos are going to be more efficient, lowering IAT's.

Deus ex machina
15-20 bhp from just changing turbos with the same map is a fantastic returnMarkB wrote:Got this reply from Jacob about running the K03/K04's on my car...

MBC and increased fuel pressure both seem a bit dodgy to me. Anyone read up on them on Audiworld ? damned cheap though, a set of bigger injectors and a bigger fuel pump will be £700 + VAT fitted I guess, you'd need a map whichever way you go.
Mihnea will have experience of all these I expect.
If this is all possible it sounds great, I'm almost ready to book my slot, although part of me thinks we would hear more of this from the various specialists if this method was practical and the hybrids were worthwhile. The reality is, I've not heard of any of the specialists removing turbos this way nor any prior talk of a K03 hybrid.
Now if the K03 hybrid is a new thing and the turbo removal method only works to remove and refit K03's we could be on to something, but I suspect this is a bit too optimistic.
Best case this is a new product, but then we are left in a position where we have no experieince of it. However if we are looking at a potential sub ~£1500 supply and fit, I'm game!
