Minhea

I am sure Leon agrees with you 100%. He doesn't expect 400 miles on a tank. However I think he does expect 300 if he drives reasonably. If he drives hard (always on boost) then I am sure he doesn't expect much at all!

Sadly however - it is a fact that motorway driving at 75mph does not return much better than 200 mile per tank in his car now :(

I didn't get 300 miles on a motorway run (Bucks to Exeter and back) in my car when stock. I gues it's how you drive it.

Graham,
Since I drove it the first tank and was the passenger the second tank - I have a pretty good idea how it was driven.. I think it's best we see how it goes over the next few weeks and then decide from there.

Unfortunately I don't think Leon will be taking it easy ever again so it may be impossible to tell

Good. I say I take it it's how you drive it, as I never seem to get near any of the motorway mileages that people speak of on here. I presume I am heavy footed regardless of how I drive. My mpg rarely varies more than 5 - ie mostly between 19-24mpg and this is for the most part most of my journeys regardless fo how I think I drive. I can't be that heavy footed though so don't belive anyone else would get much more from my almost stock car, so one in Leon's league and he results so far sound ok to me.

I think the 19-24mpg I get is great for the performance trade off, could be much worse for no other gain.

Graham, I gather Leon used to get around 350/tank when he had 330ish bhp. After speaking to various others with k04 setup he was expecting around 300 with easy 'off boost' motorway driving. The 220 miles came as a little of a shock as he is assuming he will be getting far worse than that with a heavy foot. Watch this space...........

Serious and funny post all in one.

Fuel will always be worse when you lower compression. On saying that I am more than sure MRC will fix it. You get nothing for nothing in this world. Unless you keep the compresson level high

HA! I bet you it's those pesky downpipes causing the high fuel consumption :jump:

OK.. Seriously though. Once he gets the fat downpipes on he will need a remap anyway and hopefully he will have loads more power and won't care about the consumption or perhaps Mihnea can work his magic and give him slightly better consumption to boot.

yesterday was the first time i had a chance to check out the consumption of the car on a long journey. i live in london and was working nr Wolverhampton for the day so thought it would be a good chance to see what i'd get out of it (not in any rush as on company time).

distance is 150 door to door (so 300 round trip)
way out 80mph whole way
way back some 'spirited' driving a little faster with some chilled bits
overall was 27mpg, and the light came on as i got back into london (no sitting in traffic at all)
(as an aside the M6 Toll was awesome, no one on it at all and nice road for opening it up)
PS. car is bog standard.

Right update time.

Car will be going into MRC this weekend to have the 3" downpipes fitted and a custom 2.75" catback made up and installed. Car will also have the 2001.5 inlet manifold fitted, an oil cooler fitted and finally a remap. All being well I will see near the glorious 500 mark.

I went to have the car dyno'd today so I could get a before and after with the exhaust setup and results as follows:

Image

Odd result - 395 at the wheels and calculated loss of 50HP giving 440ish which was then corrected based on external temp & pressure. They have had their own cars on this dyno and others on RR days and say the results have been pretty consistent - so were confident their rollers were accurate.

Seems my torque figures are low - but to be expected I guess wiht the standard downpipes. The kick should be awesome and closer to 500lbs/ft once the exhaust is done!!! That will get my FATS time in line with what it should be. The power curve is very much like an NA car... around 440 from 5.7k to 7.2k when the limiter kicks in! Awesome!! :D

Looking forward to hearing how you get on. Are you going with an MRC exhaust and downpipes now?

Here is Mihnea's running 511BHP to compare:

Good result. The most important thing is you have something to comapre.

Never heard of Hoffman but I think they are aUK firm and have some history in the dyno world. Looks like an inertia setup (looking at the way the graph drops), which I THINK means the engine figure should be a good.

Uhhhh, sorry but 50BHP losses and an engine power curve that is that flat up top is IMHO not great to say the least!!!

395 BHP at the wheels is serious. What does a stock S4 put out on their dyno? Have they ever ran one there? If you have 395 real HP at the wheels, then basically you have more than what I have, because my car only put down 391 ATW.

Good numbers still and if the dyno is an inertia dyno, then the torque figure looks ok-ish to me. The best torque figures and curves are achieved on braked dynos where the engine can be really loaded.

Just out of interest, how long did a run on the dyno take and what gear did they run the car in? 3rd????

Cheers,

Mihnea
