Grumbling brakes after Donington trackday

Post by B9Boy » Sun Dec 31, 2006 2:51 pm

I did the Donington trackday on the 29th.

Ive now got a nasty sounding grumble and vibration through the brakes. I used to have an Alpina BMW I used for trackdays and that would warp a set of brakes every trackday so I know what warped discs feel like and the RS6 brakes dont feel warped.

Are they gonna get better as I gently use them on the road or are they knackered??

could be warping. Did you use the handbrake at all whilst at Donny (when parked up)?

No I made sure I didnt use the handbrake at all whilst I was there to avoid heat spots. I'm not getting wheel wobble when I brake just that horrible sound you get when you hit the anchors hard from say 120mph on a motorway only it's doing this regardless of speed and no matter how gentle I am with the brakes.

To me it sounds like the track braking has left deposits of pad on the discs, as you say its a similar feel but not warped discs.

Cheers Steve, So that should clear up with a bit of normal road use perhaps?..or is there something I can buy to spray on to clean them?

Never had to deal with it myself, could call one of the tuning houses for some top-tips which I am sure they wouldnt mind giving. There is some guidance on the net to save you spending best part of a grand on new discs & pads, my favorite site for brake tips is stoptech: http://www.stoptech.com/tech_info/wp_padremoval.shtml

Try wire wool to clean the discs.

I would not drive the car anywhere until you get the pads out and check them. Probably worth getting a spare set, just in case.

The pads had only done 1,000 miles before the trackday so Im expecting there to be tonnes of meat left on them (Ill have a peek today though just to check).

Mine are fine, but I tend to be very mechanically sympathetic in the way I drive on track. I prefer to sacrifice lap times instead of wear and tear.

They should wear back to normal. Give them about 200 miles. Sounds like they were cooked on the track. Any blueing on the disks?

Theres no blueing to the discs and they appear normal visually. I dont think with these cars you need to abuse the brakes to make them work hard- 2 tonnes takes a lot of stopping!!!

120mph eh ;)

I'd get them checked, if they fail, your f**ed! Excuse the language...

I got WD40 on my motorbike discs that wouldn't burn off, so I got some brake cleaner from Halfords, about £5 for the can ....

Hi Dave- of course when I say motorway I mean closed circuit officer:) lol

I will give it another day and then start to raid Halfords shelves for some brake cleaner. You just spray it on and drive do you - I dont have to take wheels off or anything like that do I??
