Greg, this ebayer regularly puts homegrown short shift kits up for sale. No idea on quality but a lot of stateside s-cars seem to use this kit.

yeah i'd like to see what the outcome of this one is. I approached tanoga, but at the time didnt seem to be much interest from other owners for the kit so didnt look any further into developing at the time. if enough people interested we can probably get something sorted

Guys,

Do these short shifters just have a longer shaft on the lower half (below the knuckle joint) and a shorter one on the top?

If so, i'll take a hacksaw to my spare one and weld it back up with different lengths

Best way to find out is have a look at the one for the S4 and RS4 becuase the tanoga shift for them is very popular so may get some clues there.

Well, the short shift it from the States arrived during the week amd I fitted it last night. It takes about an hour, but it's well worth it. It does reduce the throw by about 40% and makes the shift very precise, this is in part due to the wear and tear the original had suffered (Not having tried an S2 from new I can't give a true comparison).

One small niggle is that is does away with the reverse detent, so there is the possibilty of tearing off from the traffic lights in reverse, fun for everyone else... but not you. So to avoid this you can, if you wish attach an audible buzzer/ pulse tone to one of the rear reversing lights ( Lexus IS200 has an audible warning when you're in reverse, its the same shift pattern)that way your have no niggling doubts before you melt the guy next to you....

Definately worthwhile. Your own is probably worn anyway, like mine was and the short shift kit is cheaper than the replacement OEM bearing. It worked out at £73 for mine including shipping and it arrived 6 days later. You can get them direct for $110.

cheers,

I am new to this forum, first post actually! But I am from the states and I am in the process of building an aby S2.

The short shift kit, is just vw parts.
It's for 5 speed applications and 6 speed. But there are other options.

Needless to say you don't have to buy over priced vw parts.
I will look for the part# but I will get back to you guys at some point.

Basically, it's a Scirocco, or golf II, bearing, it sits on the tranny housing, and basically raises the shift point.

a more reliable option but more expensive: I don't remember off the top of my head exactly which one works but if you have E*k@ (family album ) I am sure you can figure it out.

Cheers
Josh
