trying to find some info - Gearboxes
hi all,
have searched all forums but couldnt find anything on any. i am trying to find out the following for the B5 S4:
-gear ratios 1-6
-final drive (and any other gear ratios that are appropriate)
-drag coeffs (have found avant=0.31 and saloon =0.33 is this right?)
-frontal area i can measure it but could do with 'official' value
any help is much appreciated.

Looking at that, very interesting.
Do you know where I can find the gear ratios for the RS4 B5 or even the RS6 to compare?
Thanks

Mike,
That's brilliant, thanks for all of that.
To summarise then:
S4 with gearbox code DSY has the same gear ratios as the early RS4 box that had the potential 1st and 2nd gear synchro fault coded FDP.
The later RS4 gearboxes (code FTU) and those replaced under warranty (code FZW) have different ratios for 4th and 5th gears.
They all have the same final drive.
So, finally what is the difference between the S4 and RS4 gearbox, gear ratios aside for the later versions?
Thanks,
John

RS4 gearbox vs S4 one
Other than the one advantage I have posted above (Torsen bias ratio) is there any other reason to fit an RS4 box?
It seems a few people do it but other than the above I see little difference.
Thanks,
John

Re: RS4 gearbox vs S4 one
I've read in various places that the later RS4 gearboxes are stronger than earlier ones and all S4 versions. Not sure if thats true.QuantumJohn wrote:Other than the one advantage I have posted above (Torsen bias ratio) is there any other reason to fit an RS4 box?

The lower ratios and better TorSen bias are both good reasons IMO.
Let us know if you find anything else John
Well,QuantumJohn wrote:After doing more research have also found that the Torsen bias ratios are 4:1 for RS4 and 2:1 for S4. Hence the RS4 can deliver 80% to one axle, S4 66%.
I really need to know what other advantages there are to fitting the RS4 box over the S4 one.
And soon!
Thanks for any help,
John
You see I thought the same. But then I checked with Stasis because they even mention the 2:1 S4 and 4:1 RS4 difference on their webpage. They admit that the text is misleading as they wanted to write you can get closer to the RS4 B7 feel.
Anyway, they said in all the RS4 boxes they have done they have yet to find a 4:1 ratio torsen.
They modified my RS4 torsion from 2:1 to 4:1. And also if you check in ETKA you will find that the S4 torsen has the same P/N as the RS4 torsen. 01e 409 751 f
So, the 4:1 split in the RS4 seems to be a wide spread myth!
