B6 S4 tuning options...?

Post by tartan_rob » Sat Dec 09, 2006 12:59 pm

Guys - as some of you probably know, I have "enough" B5 tuning experience but little in the way of the B6 motor - somewhat of a Virgin with V8 tuning.

What can be done, what cost and what kind of bhp increase am I looking at?

Thanks,
Rob

Rob, thought you said you'd never go down that route again...

You could get a supercharger fitted, don't know who makes it but saw one at Castle Combe and it was flying! :)

Unless you go silly money (£20k+) there's not a whole heap you can do.

Mine is chipped and fitted with downpipes and sport cats from Milltek. Apart from an induction kit that's about it. Even this is £3k and you only get it up to nearly 400bhp.

Mark - correct. I would not spend silly money, but the car already has a Full Miltek with sports cats, I was thinking more like engine/gearbox map (going down the stage1 remap) route.

So bearing in mind I am running std map but full miltek set-up, am I likely to notice the increase in bhp and torque if I go for a re-map? If so, is it just a bigger pull all the way through the rev range or do I gain more at low revs etc?

Thanks,
Rob

rob.. going off thread but ...

how is the new motor mate.. and i know your old beast was -- a beast but -- how would a stock B5 S4 owner find the changes of the B6
i've read a few erports on the B6 and all point towards a more grown up feel. more stable. not so point and squirt but more elegant whoosh..
is this about it.

Buzzard - It has been a long time since I was in a std B5 but if you had a std B5 and upgraded to a std B6 I would think it would be a step up, the B5 in std trim will be quicker lower down the rev range but the B6 is faster higher up the rev range and pulls hard to redline. With regards to everything else, I feel the B6 is superior everywhere (but fuel economy worse). Handling, looks, quality, finish, reliability, noise, posture, braking, ease of ownership and so on.

It is a much more accepting and grown up car car all round. As you say, not so much point and squirt. I do 100 miles every day (to work one day and back the next next). I do approx 85miles motorway (M4, M25, M1) and 15miles of B roads, the fastest time I have done the journey in was the B6. The B5 was at times too quick and would scare you off from driving it too its limit - unless you could afford to die or write off the car..!

I loved my B5 S4 and nowadays give most B5's a wide berth as I know what they are capable of but for me the B6 is a better all round car, a good step up and much more sensible.

In about 3 months of ownership, I have opened the bonnet 2 times to check the oil level, on the B5m I had it open every other day, just to check oil and check for air leaks etc etc. Beware though, with the Miltek, the noise will kill you, it is quite glorious...........

thanx rob.
i feel that my next car would probably be the B6 S4.
i am limited to colour and unobrusiveness becouse of my use for the car. silver or black is my limit.
the milltek on my B5 was loud enough for me but still gives a mellow growl. the B6 has such smooth lines and the wheels ,even in standard form , fill the arches,
i'm not quite ready for changing yet but have , like you, also cosidered the RS6 but have to admit that it is out of my league.
the B6 seams to tick all the right boxes-- even extra leg room for the growing kids.
also 21k gets a nice level of car low miles and that all important newness.
my motoring is mainly country roads so handling a bonus but the B6 is , i think, a better cruiser.
cheers,-- Paul.

I think I will end up ripping my 2.7t out and fitting it to a B7... along with brakes etc! That is the only downside to the B5... its OLD... first released in 95-96 or something!

That would be a car i'd be interested in... Lookout for a car with blown engine, would need to be a quattro shell though

I can't agree with you there Leon - I think the B5 still has a "modern" look about it, and the B4 S2 for that matter too.

I admit that the B6 styling is a step forward, but I'm afraid the B7 still isn't growing on me...perhaps it's my age...

horses for courses really.
i reckon b6 is nice motor in its own right -- as is the b5
b6 stock makes a nice balance between cool and quick but refined enough to take the family out.(same reason i bought the b5)
would love to try the 500 horse supercharged mod version though
taaaa there we go again. more more more... we cant leave em a lone can we.
