Picked up my S4
Re: Picked up my S4
Carps,
The typical operating oil temp of an S4 is 80 to 100 degrees. Drive it hard and it will go up to 120 and over. I'm sure those driven on trackdays will get even hotter!
However most importantly below 80 the engine is not necessarily ready to be stressed. I suggest that you do as I do:
Drive as gently as you feel you can until the oil gauge just starts to leave the 60 mark. In know this is a PITA, but below 60 degrees the oil is really not up to the job for the turbos.
Now you can start to use low boost, and this will really heat up the oil and get it to 80 within a few minutes.
From 80 you can start to use full boost.
You tend to get good fuel consumption if you drive above 50 mph and don't accelerate too much. Town driving and use of full boost soon uses the fuel. You'll get better mpg with 97 RON & Optimax than 95 RON, but I don't recommend you use 95 anyway.
My typical consumption (according to the DIS) is around 24-25 mpg. It has gone down to 21 mpg but never below.

Dippy, et al...
Cheers for the advice again.
Now what is "PITA" ?

PITA is a bread pocket often stuffed with Kebab meat, salad and chilli sauce at 3am on drunken Saturday mornings.
Alternatively, it can also stand for "pain in the ar$3"

Re: Picked up my S4
My MPG is the same as most and as Dippy's. Average DIS reading 24 and when I worked this out over a couple of tanks it’s about right although a little conservative.

Re: Picked up my S4
Hi
Can I ask how you find the handling so far?
Having a test drive later this week and just a bit concered by the potential understeer characteristics given the 60% weight bias to the front...
Cheers.

Re: Picked up my S4 (B5)
I'm used to Golf GTIs and a VW Beetle (1962 vintage) with about 170BHP . Compared to them, the handling is totally locked in. I haven't pushed it in the lower gears round the corneres yet, as full throttle acceleration in third is currently impressive enough, but a lot of people talk about the understeer. Apparently H&R suspension cures the problems. I have that next on my list of things to do, but my main reason *right now* is to get rid of the huge gap between tyre and arch, as opposed to curing handling problems.
One thing I can recommend is the Tanoga shortshifter. Had mine fitted yesterday (thanks Karl ) and it makes the world of difference.

Re: Picked up my S4
Gareth,
I don't think the understeer on the S4 is particularly bad, and in fact I think the understeer on the 'old' Impreza was worse. What is most noticable about stock S4 suspension is the body roll and nose-dive during braking.
What cars are you used to?

Re: Picked up my S4
Dippy,
Gareth is enquiring about the B6 V8 S4, not our B5 2.7tt S4.
The timing of this thread has caused confusion.

Thanks for pointing out that I was asking about the 'wrong' S4...ahem... i'll get my coat...
I was of course asking about the new V8 S4 not the previous V6 Twin Turbo job-apologies for the oversight
Cheers.

Yeah, I realised after I posted.
Nevertheless if Audi haven't made the B6 have less understeer than the B5 then they don't deserve to do a B7.
