I remember it first time around :( It didn't seen totally unusual then, unless the memory is playing tricks.

Villeneuve senior was always entertaining. Does anyone remember him wrecking his car by driving it a lap back to the pits on 3 wheels ?

Yes he was outstanding, Alan Jones in the Williams was very entertaining as well!

In fact still watch the vids occasionally from those days (The good old days).

Well not entirely true. Carbon fibre is exceptionally strong for the forces the part is designed to deal with, but not so great for forces its not designed to deal with....... Ie a carbon rod designed for tensile strength would be significantly lighter and stronger than a steel rod. But any significant lateral impact to the rods would result in the carbon one taking more damage. Itwould probably snap the carbon rod as opposed to the steel rod which might bend a little.......... sorry....
any way the point being is that if modern day F1 carss touch like that the wheels tend to fly off which is apparently a safety feature ;)

Confusionhunter I stand to be corrected, on what basis / experience do you make your claims? From what you say you say sound as if you are directly involved in Formula 1 Motor racing if not a composite FEA expert, am I right you dark horse you…?

I make glass fibre carbon carbon/kevlar bits ;) , I'm not directly involved in F1 but some of my suppliers are... More of a hobby now, a long time ago I worked for a company that made GP bike fairings.... Although Im quite happy to stand corrected, but thats my understanding.

Confusionhunter is correct.

I have seen many a carbon push rod in pieces after a side load.
