Audi Tdi 115 -130bhp how do I know

Post by Paulm » Sat Nov 11, 2006 1:38 pm

My bro has just bought a 99 A6 TDI and the guy said it was a 130bhp. I test drove it and wonder if it is.

How can I tell?

cheers

On the engine cover, I think the TDi badge has some letters red and others silver, this denotes the bhp I think, eg red 'T' and 'D', silver 'i' means 130 bhp. Just not sure which combination is which....

Badge in boot/spare wheel well with engine power in kw is the only reliable method.

Red i means 115 bhp. red Di is 130 and the entire lot in red is 150. That is only in the PD engine range, early cars had silver badge for 90bhp and red i for 110.

Badges are not a reliable method - it seems dealers arent always aware what badge goes with what engine.

Best method is engine code in boot/spare wheel well as GrahamS4 pointed out.

I did some digging when I was looking for our Golf GT TDI 115PS and came up with the following. Pretty sure it's still corect for the Audi. If not the engine codes, the KW to BHP will be a good enough guide.

The PD engines

BHP--------KW--------ENGINE CODE

100--------74--------ATD/AXR

115--------85--------AJM/AUY (same power, differing torque, AUY better I recall)

130--------96--------ASZ

150--------110--------ARL

And the non PD

70--------50--------AGP/AQM

90--------66--------AGR/ALH

110--------81--------AHF/ASV

That sucks! It not being a PD engine is the biggest kick in the teeth.

I've driven a Golf 110 and it wasn't bad though.

I don't think VAG make it easy for consumers to tell to be honest and the genuine lack of knowledge at garages is as rife as delaers using it to their advantage.

At least he's probably not victim to 40K mile cambelt changes like ours though!

I would think carefully. There should be a value distinction between the PD and non PD engines. There is a clear trade description issue with the sale, I would be tempted to return the car on principle.

if it were me I would be half way down there by now.

He phoned the dealer, and he said he knew it was the 110 and was sorry that the advert was wrong (yeah right )

I did think when driving it home it just was not powerful enough. I was more concerned re the bodywork ( the only + side is the car is imaculate ) and just never though to check the power

The dealer offered him £200 which he accepted. I still think he should return it but not my decison.

Yeah, put the £200 towards a generic map from REVO etc.
