Oil Recommedations

Post by si_hill » Tue Oct 31, 2006 9:36 am

Right well I think it's about time to change the oil as 5k is up since the last service.

What oil do you recommend for these engines. On my A4 1.8T I always used fully synthetic Synta Gold 0-40. I assume this will be ok for the S4?

Let me know what you guys are using.

I've just got some Total Quartz 9000 5W40 for mine. Only about £17 for ~ 4 litres from GSF. Meets 502 and 505 spec

5W40 was the recomended grade a while ago.

Not sure if it's any good but I was going to give it a try.

Just checked over my service history, as my motor due a change very soon, Norwich Audi (Robinson's) have used Castrol GTX 10W-40.

Not sure whether to use the same again or go 0W-40 like the rest of you guys are quoting??!

I would steer well clear of GTX 10W-40.

0w40 or 5w40 are recomended grades

What reasons would you steer clear of GTX 10W-40??? It's just that i have been using this for the past 2.5 years and never had any probs with it!!!
Hmmm, its fast but is it fast enough!!!

I've used 10w60 before and always been happy with it, on this oil change I'm using Mobil 1 15w50.

I doubt you would notice any problems, ie running issues, until it was too late, ie engine destroyed if 10W-40 was incorrect......

It was an Audi dealer pouring 10w-40 into my car so thats why im sticking with it. not much differnce that castrol edge apart from the price.

the first part of the oil rating is for winter use (W) and second part is summer. i.e. viscosity.
So Castrol GTX will be marginally thicker than 0w-40 in winter. Surely thats not a bad thing?!

You'd only notice a difference between 0W and 10W if we have a very cold winter. Personally I prefer 0W in winter but I'm a bit of an old woman at times :(

The EDGE sport stuff does (IIRC) - and it's the replacement for Castrol Formula RS (FWIW it's also what Doug@MRC recommended when i did the last oil change )
