Can a basic head unit control a Phatbox?

Post by tuscy » Fri Oct 13, 2006 7:58 am

I have a 2004 B6 S4 Avant that is only fitted with the basic CD/cassette head unit. There is no CD changer in the boot.

Does this basic head unit have the ability to control a CD changer ... and therefore a Phatbox?

If so is the changer cable pre-installed somewhere (glovebox? boot?)

By basic CD/cassete, and the year of your car you mean a symphony II? if so then yes, but it is not prewired, you will need a 5M cable to run from the HU to the boot.

Tuscy - My 2003/4 S4 had the CD in the glovebox not the boot. I simply removed the metal work on the phatbox and screwed it to the glovebox. Fortunatelty I had the cable there but unless you want to keep this small part of the glovebox empty then I'd say this is the easy way.

Thanks guys.

One other question about the Phatbox. The voice navigation system sounds great but isn't it a bit of pain to use when you have a huge amount of artists/albums? (I have almost 5000 songs on my iPod)

Just how easy is it to quickly locate a particular artist in, say, a total of 100? Does it have to read each one to you in turn or can you accelerate the process?

You would go into artist mode and then go through by letter. Once the correct letter's selected then you'd go through in sequence. Of course you don't have to listen to the full announcement. You can just keep pressing the next button.

Are you able to get the songs off your ipod onto mp3/wav format then? Thought that .acc stuff was locked (unless the hacker has released his code already?)

Alternative would be to get an ipod adapter for your car and then use the ipod navigation. The you don't have to "load up" your phatbox.

http://www.phatnoise.com may be of help in finding whether a phatbox is compatible with your head unit.

Luckily I was smart enough to rip all my music in MP3 to allow compatibility with other players.

Thanks for the help.
