I had a chap who worked for the council who wished to up his mileage. Expenses fiddle I suspect.
As Martin suggests the trade tend not to get involved, the most obvious is the private owner who trims the car back between mots, quick self lub change. Who would know. This is the most common.

Very easy to do on any VAG car, and a two minute job...... I bought a two year old 70K mile Passat, turns out when it went in for warrentee work, that the last time it was in the garage, it had completed 132K miles..........
Car came from auction house, was in reasonably good shape for the miles.......... I did get my money back without much issue...

How can a car cover 132k in two years? Thats 254 miles per day, 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year....

I work in the construction industry... I know of a Contracts Manager for one of our subcontractors that lives in Cornwall and covers jobs from London to Newcastle to Nottingham to Birmingham, last I saw of him he was doing 70K miles a year and had his Renault serviced about every six weeks. Total false economy of his employment in my opinion.
Present:...
Lotus Evora GT410 Sport, Caterham 420R, CCM Spitfire, VW T2 Bay Window 1976

Past:
DB11 AMR, 992, 991.2, Yamaha MT01, 640d Gran Coupe, 635d Coupe, RS6 C5, Audi TT 225 Coupe, Astra with wind up windows, Citroen ZX, Rover 213, yes behold, a Rover 213... Renault 5

Unknown to me the car belonged to a Building Materials supplier who specialised in some form of sprayed liquid waterproof cement... when I got hold of the fleet manager, I was told the guy covered North and South Ireland, Scotland and Boarders..... which he obviously did continuously...The warrenty report was interesting......and the car had been serviced every 10K miles

I saw a couple of R32's for sale a few months ago they were both 2 years old and had covered over 250,000 miles each !!! It panned out they were used as courier cars for a london diamond dealer and were run constantly between somewhere in southern europe and london, they were perfectly open about the mileage and the reason why it was so high they also had a full VW main dealer service history with them and had been serviced with no expense spared every 4-6 weeks. I certainly got the impression that the company used them as they were solid reliable and fast they simply had 2 drivers constantly backwards and forwards across europe in them, i guess it beats an armoured transit van.

I wonder how much they got for them.
