With ref to my other post about low mileage rs4s does anyone know if its a simple process to change the indicated mileage ?? I am of course assuming it is possible and is it possible to check with vagcom?

AFAIK mileage can only be changed when the dash is new, but there are possibly people out there that have worked out a way around this...

General condition of the rest of the car should give a hint as to whether they have skimmed a few '000's of the mileage......

ok after some trawling of the net it seems to be quite an easy process to alter the mileage on an audi --- can the vagcom detect this?

Please do tell more...

Service history and mileage register check should pick up on things like this though.

The sort of owner that has kept a low mileage S/RS is likely to keep good history with the car. I was keen to see good evidence buying a 28K mile 1998 S4. With a full Audi SH, a stamped service book I confirmed with Audi and enough MOT's to see the mileage was genuinly low and consistent, not out of sync with the service book, I was happy. Car condition also came into play of course, but to be honest it was he documentation that proved it as credit to the cars they wear well.

I now fill in the mileage on all DVLA forms as I think it wil help the car's history in the future.

Just look in the back of the auto trader at the adds for dash repairs , they all clock cars all day every day . When i fitted rs4 clocks to my s4 i had them altered to my original mileage as ive got full service history , this cost £80 .
The guy said that he does every car on the market .

Its very easy to do on all VAG cars. Infact, main dealers do it all the time

I know of a couple of guys that had problems with the dash electrics... The solution being that they replaced the dash; this obviously bought into question the digital mileage reading. Basically they were informed that when a new dash is used, the mileometer manufactured is programmed to be able to receive one setting in its life. So if its set at 0 as new, then it can never be changed again, and likewise if your replacing your 28K mile dash, its set to 28K and thats your lot.

Gives some peace of mind given the freely available VAG.COM that it can't be tinkered with, but basically as has been mentioned, basic checks are the best, I have previously flushed out a clocked car, and in my opinion the young lad who was selling was genuinely gutted when I proved it in his paperwork. He really didn't have a clue about cars, he told me he had bought it from an old Army Major and didn't bother checking out the car as he assumed he could trust the seller. I very politely walked away and felt quite sorry for the lad.

They can be changed as many times as you want !!. TBH the public , not the trade tend to clock cars as the thought of going to jail puts them off !!!!!
