my car is too slow!

Got QST to look at my RS2 just after purchase as she needed a service - on John Roberts' recommendation. Money well spent as Kim et al obviously know their Audi S and RS cars. Kim can be contacted on 01444 451542. QST are at GTI-International this weekend if you're going.

A question about the turbo noise...
The car I am about to buy makes a very quiet noise when you pull off - it sounds like a police siren. It goes away as you accelerate. Is this anything to be worried about ?

Re: my car is too slow!
IMO Yes.
I read a lot about turbo failure on AudiWorld, and the 'police siren' sound was always a prequel to turbo failure.
My car is chipped and I have a full Miltek exhaust such that the turbos are louder than normal. With my windows up and the radio off I can 'just' about hear them spool. With the window open I can hear them spool around the 1500-2500 rpm range when I'm boosting. It sounds like a very feint whistle, a bit like a dentist drill, rising in pitch until it goes (I presume) ultrasonic. My Impreza made a similar noise. I have listened to other S4s and they sound the same, so I believe it is healthy.
However I would not by any means describe it as a 'police' siren. It does not sound like air rushing and there is no harshness to it.
If you go ahead and buy the S4, make sure it comes with a warranty. If you state up front that you think the turbos are noisy and might be 'on the way out' then the dealer has a choice - he can replaced them before you take delivery or he can agree to replace them if and when they fail.
Don't forget: Turbos don't last forever.

Re: my car is too slow!
The noise is very feint. I could only just hear it, but now you have me worried. It is a private sale so no warranty or dealer backup. Doh ! Anyone got any suggestions ?
Re: my car is too slow!
I'd get a dealer to inspect the car.
There is a pre-warranty inspection. I think Toasty had it before he got an Audi extended warranty on his S4.
Tell the seller purchase is conditional on an inspection pass and tell the dealer you will take warranty if the car passes the inspection. See what they both say.

Re: my car is too slow!
I didn't actually have the inspection as I had the car warrantied following a major service (thought I'd kill two birds with one albeit expensive stone)
I think the inspection is of the order of £50, but to be fair considering the expense of S4 parts (£1600 ish for a par of turbos I beleive) then I think it's money well spent.
If they (the audi dealers) say it's fine, then I'd be tempted to go for the 1yr warranty costing £765, it's given me real peace of mind.

Re: my car is too slow!
.. mine now booked into QSTuning for next tuesday. I'm not dropping oil, there's no smoke on startup and I can only hear the turbos with the window open (although they are easily heard) - so hopefully I've only got an air leak somewhere.
If that's the case I'm treating me baby to a short shifter and maybe a new air filter to liven things up a tad!
Thanks for your help and advice everyone.

Careful on the air filter front - fit a K&N and you might end up with a dead MAF due to oil deposits - general concensus is stick to OEM on AW.

Well I hope not!
My turbos are only 2000 miles old and they make the 'police siren' noise. The old ones were not as apparent.
I feel that the performance is better now too

If you think about how the S4 ECU controls torque (closed loop based on boost pressure), it is fairly obvious that a K&N will offer no performance advantage.
It may have a slight advantage to turbo longevity, but I agree that the risk of contamination of the MAF makes that not really worth it.
