Just bought an M5!!!

Post by edcase » Mon Oct 02, 2006 5:02 pm

Well, I pick up my E39 M5 tonight

Post more details later, going to run the RS6 simulataneously while I sell her, she will also be posted up for sale in the next day or two.

Despite the M5 being quicker on paper, I'm sure going to miss that punch in the kidneys, not to mention the looks of amazement and admiration from others.

I will be putting my name down for a 2008 RS6 Avant shortly ;)

erm mate, are you wise, I sold my M5 E39 because it was useless, the RS6 is ten times better !!

I even went to a brand new M3 in between, that was good but again the Rs6 is a different world.

Fair play Ed, give us some more details then of your money saving scheme!? I just punched in M5 on Autotrader and there were well over 100 for sale, some massive price differences... I was gobsmacked at a 51 plate for £40K, I think he's a little optimistic there! (also there is an RS6 for £50K which is also a little hopefull.
Present:...
Lotus Evora GT410 Sport, Caterham 420R, CCM Spitfire, VW T2 Bay Window 1976

Bigman,

Having also now owned both I think I'm in good shape to comment.

The RS6 is amazing at getting you from A to B very quickly in any condition.

It has amazing *grip*.

However it does not have a dynamic edge when it comes to overall handling. It is simple fact, and agreed amongst most car enthusiasts. Too much weight at the nose, too much mechanic grip, too heavy overall, and 4wd. Effective, but not what I'm looking for right now.

As for slow, are you pulling my chain? The M5 is a hairs breadth faster to 100mph but a full 3 seconds faster to 150mph! Maybe yours had the Vanos issue???

Just driven home now, and believe me it ain't slow!

As for dated, I do prefer the overall look and feel of my RS6 inside and out (I have the Avant, I'm not a huge fan of the saloon shape) but I'd hardly call it dated?!

Ultimately, things like this are always personal and subjective, but as of right this minute I have both cars on the drive, and it's the RS I'm selling :)

Edcase, dunno if you had a boost issue with your '6 coz the figures I found show the RS blowing the M5 away:

0-60 0-100 0-150 1/4 mile 30-70
RS6 4.3 10.4 26.8 12.8 4.6
M5 4.8 11.7 27.6 13.2 5.4

And it makes sense too, I drove an m5 whilst I had my RS4, and it was boring, felt old, and just didnt have the kick of the RS.
Yeah it probably handles better on a track, provides more feedback etc etc but as an everyday car with traction, practicality and masses of power, the RS's win hands down.

Ed, you're not going to knock the RS6 or sell me an M5 over one. You're selling the RS6 for financial reasons and there's nothing wrong with that, it's an expensive car if you're not totally committed to it.

Golfather, I think you will find that is the stats for the RS6+

0-60 is 4.7
0-100 is 11.6
0-140 is 26.2
1/4 mile is 13.3

M5 E39:

0-60 4.9
0-100 10.7 to 11.5 depending where you look
0-140 23.8
1/4 mile 13.1 to 13.9 (again depending where you look)

Rupert - I'm not trying to put the car down or sell you an M5. Why on earth would I? But please don't wear rose-tinted 'owner' spectacles and try and say the RS6 has better performance dynamics than an M5. Every review, from Evo to Top Gear, says exactly the same. Of all the car forums I didn't expect this one to be full of marque zealots, I have to say I'm genuinely disappointed...

No seriously Ed !!

There was Nothing wrong with my M5 is had full vanos replaced on warranty, and both maf's (common problems)

And despite your figures, the RS6 is miles faster !!! No question about it, once you get over 120mph then yeh theoretically the M5 will likley keep up but who cares about that its all about getting around below that speed !!

I can tell you though , that my M5 would not keep to the RS6

Also the M5 is CRAP compared to my E46 M3 !!

The M3 will destroy it anyday wet or dry.

Golfathers figures are correct, but I would say very generous towards the m5 !

the M5 is like a Boat mate !

Parkers figures Rs6

Engine Size: 4172 cc
Cylinders: 8
0-60 mph: 4.5 s
Power Output: 443 bhp
Valves: 40
Torque: 560 Nm
Top Speed: 155 mph

M5 E39
Engine Size: 4941 cc
Cylinders: 8
0-60 mph: 5.1 s
Power Output: 400 bhp
Valves: 32
Torque: 500 Nm
Torque: 369 lb/ft
Top Speed: 155 mph

admittedly on paper similar, but in reality, having owned both the RS6 is better.

LOL, okay mate whatever you say ;)

Golfathers figures are correct FOR AN RS6+ not a normal RS6.

The RS6 feels faster through the seat of the pants, because of the turbo's. I'm sorry but I'm going to take GPS test figures from the likes of Evo over your own untested, unproven subjective guesswork. End of story.

As for being a boat, well the RS6 weighs 150kg more than the M5, and has the entire bulk of the engine ahead of the front axle!

Ultimately they are both great cars, it's horses for courses, but please don't try to rewrite black and white facts.
