Quite right - I'm just wanting to balance the front/rear bias resulting from the slight front upgrade.

I'd be quite happy with RS4 B5 stock brakes on the rear, but there were some RS6 rears going cheap when I raised the question.

RS4 B7

Well that's not strictly true - the discs are RS4 B7 and the calipers are RS6.

What's the difference, look the same to me? you may well ask

Not a lot is the answer - they are almost identical 8 pot Brembos - if you look at the detail, which Doug pointed out to me, the RS6 calipers have a strengthening bar connecting one end of the caliper to the other :?

Ok - what power are you putting out presently? .....and what mods have you had done to your car if you don't mind me asking?

I ask this because in a couple of days time (assuming Doug got my parts delivered) i will be running with gutted pre-cats, Milltek 3" cat-back, MRC custom re-map (to be visited again by Doug after the gutted pre-cats are fitted - hopefully be able to advance the timing further to take advantage of the increase in flow) and lowered/stiffened eibach pro-kit springs + H&R ARBs), my turbs are stock K03s but seem to be pretty healthy at the moment - no horrid noises! (touch wood they stay that way)

My stock brakes don't exactly inspire confidence now, let alone with the increase in power (hopefully) that the pre-cat gutting will realise, so probably gonna have to do the front brakes at least!

Would a set of B5 RS4 front discs and calipers do the job (assuming that I may be running about 340/350 crank bhp)???

My target power is 350bhp and I plan to just run B5 RS4. Figure that it was fitted as standard on a 380bhp car, I don't do track days so should be fine...

Yep - i was kinda using the same logic as that - should also be the cheapest option too? (anyone selling any second hand, but good condition front B5 RS4 discs/calipers??)

Right Jules, you raise a few questions there, so I'll deal with them in turn :-

Mods to car (so far) :-
RS4 downpipes and catback (gutted precats)
MRC remap
H&R coilovers and ARBs
RS4 B7 front brakes (as explained above)
AWE DTS
Short shifter
Usual maintenance items - 710N DVs, Samco hoses, and new MAF
The other RS4 bits are mostly cosmetic (front bumper, etc)

In the garage (going on soon):-
AWE intercoolers

I would estimate that I'm currently putting out about 320bhp and 500nm.

I don't want to put you off, but gutted precats will not guarantee better timing - some cars, I'm told, "simply can't" and mine seems to be one of those, but I'm not giving up hope yet - we'll see what happens when the new timing belt is fitted.

I changed the stock brakes because, like you, they did not inspire confidence, especially on the "rolling road"...

I acknowledge that the RS4 B7 upgrade is totally OTT for my normal use, although having said that I was also looking to the future when I chose them, and at some point I'll be kicking out more bhp and torque than the new RS4.

I don't know much about the B5 RS4 front brakes but it seems that the general consensus is that they're a big improvement on the S4 stock, but still not perfect - although Cosworth considered them adequate to stop a 380bhp upgraded S4. Apparently, although fade isn't so much of an issue, the discs are prone to warp - but surely that's only after some serious track (ab)use...?

On balance, it really depends on your use of the car. I would have thought that the B5 RS4 setup would be quite adequate for road use.

I don't mind you asking at all - give me a call if you'd like to discuss in more detail

How about B7 RS4 rear discs, i dont know if there is any way around not using B7 calipers and brackets as it works out a lot dearer than the eight pot fronts.

It's an option, but as you say, it's an expensive one.

Brooner's done it with good results - see his thread on the whole RS4 B7 brake upgrade

Whether you could get the B7 rear discs to mate with the B5 caliper though, is a different matter...

very similar if not exactly the same as the 6 plus standard set up as far as I can see.... if I could get my new ETKA to work I could tell you the part numbers, but I am having a few issues with it :audibash: :audibash: :drink:

The rear disks won't fit with the B5 rear calipers due to the claiper braket i change out the whole rear and fitted the B7 calipers, braket, and disks the B7 rear calipers look identical to the B5 same single piston so you might get away wiht just buying the diskes and B7 caliper braket probably not the correct name but i'm sure some one will corret me soon

Yes, the only visible difference between the B5 and B7 rear calipers is that they're painted black...

If they are the same then, as you say Brooner, all you would need is the discs and caliper carrier (bracket), which was what I was asking really

Anyway, I think I'm back to Plan A - rear B5 RS4 (discs, caliper carrier, and handbrake cable)
