Re: Mov'it For RS6
And here is the reason for changing from 8 pots:
There are really good reasons for replacing the 8 piston calliper and rotor in front and ditching the rear brake set-up.
The 8 piston calliper has four very small pads, which easily overheat. Furthermore, the series rotor is designed in such a way that it is impossible for air to be forced into it.
Consequently, on production cars, the rotor hot spots, the pads catch fire, pad wear is dreadful and rotors get destroyed very easily. AMG uses the same calliper and has problems too.
The six piston calliper has twice the pad area of the 8 piston calliper and the 380mm rotors are properly ventilated, helped by some bodywork.
The production rear brakes are terrible and do very little work as the pads are incredibly hard in order to make the handbrake work.
Switching to a setup with a proper rear brake and a separate calliper for the rear brake removes the compromise inherent in the series design.
A car, with about 1,500 km, has completed cooked rotors, quite blue, because of the poor ventilation. At no stage had this car ever brakes firmly enough to activate the ABS. Reviewing how it may have happened, there were three quite quick stops from 280kph to 100kph weithin a space of 10 minutes, thanks to idiots on the Autobahn at night.

I think the pic looks like an RS4.... Movit, more like 'Fear it'

Dave, the explanation you give above is so similar to the one thay give for replacing the (albeit smaller) brakes on the S4.
Probably a silly question, but Audi seem to have installed inadequate brakes on the S2, S4, RS4 and now the RS6
I wonder why brakes always seem to be their weakness?

Well the brakes are fine fornormal driving
What they forget is the people buying these cars are not normal, and are not going to drive it normally

Re: Mov'it For RS6
I believe the brakes for the RS6 are made by Brembo.. same people who makes the brakes for AMD.. looks like Audi have tried hard to improve things without going to the cost of Mov'it...
and I must say for road use they are awsome.. Evo magazine said that on the track they wern't so good.. but you've also got to remember it a heavy car!!
I can't justify spending £7000 on mov'its when the brakes are more than ok already... I'll see how things pan out.. If i do destroy them at the ring for example then I will upgrade them then

The way I understand it is, Brembo make brakes for Porsche, ........ and Movit. Just rebranding mate

To be honest John, (he he.. Honest John )
That doesn't sound like a bad idea.. these German's know what they are doing.. cheaper too with the euro situation and your're hardly going to declare new brakes on the way home

Re: Mov'it For RS6
Guys
To clear up a few points from the above posts:
The quoted reason for switching to Mov'it brakes, front and rear, was written by myself as a post to http://www.rs6.com/, not as a piece of Mov'it advertising. I am only a customer of Mov'it.
The production RS6 brakes are not suitable for ordinary driving, in a country where high speeds are legal. quattro GmbH is currently undertaking research into alternative brakes for the RS6, as so many owners have problems.
The design of the 'floating' rotors is fine in concept but poor in practice. Although vented, there is no way that air can be directed into the centre of the rotors to be distributed through the interior of the rotors (you can't force air in from the circumference) and thus cool the rotors as they spin. Because the rotors are isolated on steel pins, there is no way that the heat stored in the rotors can escape into the hat, or carrier, so rotors very quickly reach heat saturation. Stopping three times from 280kph to 100kph in a few minutes, completely blued the rotors on a car with 1500km on it.
The standard callipers, also used by AMG, have 4 small pad surfaces per side, these tend to overheat and burn. AMG also has this problem, the 6-piston calliper from Brembo has a much larger contact area and hence a lesser tendency to hot-spot. Because the RS6 is an automatic, the brakes are applied much more frequently than on manual cars, this encourages the tendency to 'hot-spot' as experienced by those with the production brakes.
Yes, Audi IS cheap when it comes to brakes, I guess the Accounting department does not have many demanding drivers in it! Why didn't the factory spot this during testing. Well, the testers at the Nordschliefe DID report their concerns to the development team. However, the test drivers are so good themselves that they don't use the brakes as hard or as frequently as lesser skilled drivers; so the test cars did not experience the amount of brake problems the testers predicted and the bean counters leapt on this as an excuse not to change the brakes.
The photographs of the Mov'it brakes further up this thread ARE from an RS6, not an RS4.
DO I like the Mov'it brakes - yes, brilliant. I particularly like the front-rear balance, no nose dive when making maximum retardartion halts, and repeatable without fading. Only a little bit of squeaking, which is soon 'fixed'.

I did get thanked for writing that guff, and I believe Guido's Dad might have added it to the website.
Guido is lucky having a car nut for a father, I went for a ride in the Jarama..... but that is another story!
