Does this mean with some (warranty) tweaking at the dealers I could get TMC working? (Presume and upgrade to use bluetooth via the MMI is still "impossible"?) AndyRS4- who did you deal with there?

Cheers
Bobjebb,

My understanding is that there is an important difference between CD-Rom based systems and DVD based systems. With the CD-Rom, the disc holds map data only and you can buy upgraded discs from third parties like Teleatlas (provided it's compatible with you system.) you can even transfer discs from other cars. When I upgraded the RS4 sat nav, I just bought the TMC enabled navigation disc from Teleatlas and everything worked without any input or upgrades from Audi.

The DVD based system are specific to individual MMI versions, so a DVD from one car could cause an MMI crash in another similar Audi with a different version of the MMI software. Apparently, Ed at Worcester who sorted this out for me, said he had one customer recently who transferred a copy of a Mercedes DVD into his Audi with catastrophic results! So if you have a DVD based system you will have to go through the dealership.

I thought that the RS6 was a CD-Rom based system so I would have thought you could purchase a TMC enabled disc.

Good luck.

Have you bought a dvd disc which is TMC enabled for a new RS4? If so which one was it on the teleatlas web site? I think i would be prepared to pay for this disc if it meant me saving time on some journeys!!!!!

DVD's for the RNS-E are ONLY available from Audi.

CD's that are TMC enabled (for the earlier Audi RNS-D systems) have been available from Teleatlas since 2004.

At the moment there is NO UK TMC for any car with an RNS-E - that includes the RS4.

Oh and don't confuse RNS-E with MMI. They are totally different DVD based systems.

MMI is for the new A6, new A8 and Q7 only.

RNS-E is fitted to new A3, later B6 A4/S4 and B7 A4/S4/RS4 , and some of the last old model A6/Allroad/RS6+

I just got the latest DVD 2006_1 for £20 and not from Audi!

Oh! mine is RNS-E being a 6+, so what is the MMI logo that comes up each time I switch on? I always thought MMI was just Audi's name for the software and the RNS-E was related to the hardware.
RS4 B5. Where it all started.
RS6+ Never to be replaced.
Replaced by: 997 Turbo. Didn't like.
Replaced by RS6. I like(d).
Land Rover Defender. Not as nippy.
Back with C6 RS6
And again C7 RS6

Yes, you are right it's confusing. Audi call the system in the A6/A8/Q7 MMI and is more intergrated into the car than the RNS-E units in our cars. They use different DVD's though.

OK to clarify, not officially from any retailer other than Audi. Unlike the CD's which could use any TravelPilot or TravelPilot DX disc (depending on the version of hardware), which could be bought from several retail sources.

I haven't bought ANY of my DVD's directly from Audi (they charge a stupid price), always from an intermediary (usually in Europe) at a much better price.

But I've always made sure I buy a genuine original, some copies work OK and some don't (especially at temperature extremes) - the RNS-E seems sensitive to the media used for copies.

MMI - the system that comprises a pop-up screen above the dashboard with the main control panel built into the console below the gear selector. Built into the vehicle. Usually also controls other functions as well as audio and satnav, such as suspension comfort settings etc.

RNS-E - the "box" that fits in a hole the dashboard. It contains screen, controls, wiring and can be removed from a vehicle. Can be retrofitted. Only does audio/satnav.

MMI is the name Audi gave to its proprietary design of menus and control buttons (ie the same kind of interface for the vehicle integrated system and the RNS-E "box".)

Thanks for the info very informative. I can now talk to people on a technical level about it now  Doesnt the screen in the RS4 (or any other A4) when first started light up with the words MMI?

Thanks for clarifying that. I was wondering why my A8 had TMC but guys with DVD sat nav in RS4's could not have it.

Does that mean if I buy an S4/RS4 with RNS E and a factory car kit then the screen will not control the phone like it does on my A8?

Nope, the RNS-E with the appropriate car kit will control the phone just fine. I've just had the bluetooth kit retrofitted to my RNS-E and it works a treat.
