Steering wheel removal

Hi all

Tried to remove the steering wheel on my S4 yesterday and got as far as the bolt that holds it on. Anyone know what size splined bit I need?

Also what is the large cast lump of metal that is mounted on soft rubber behind the airbag with the large hole through it for? Bad discription I know

Mark,

I think it is 16mm spline but it could be 18mm. Can't remember exactly.
No idea what the metal lump does. It has 3 screws holding it on to the wheel and is quite heavy. Perhaps for the airbag to sit against as every force has an opposite reaction?

Anyone know where I can get a tool from to remove my wheel. Both the local Motor Factors don't stock spline drives!

Shineydave knows exactly what the spline tool is to remove the wheel.

The metal block is what makes the horn's contacts meet - also a bad description

Dont forget to mark the steering wheel and spline before removing

right, the tool we used is a 12 spline and it's 12.0mm across the splines. it's marked on the shaft as "Draper 12" but i don't know if that refers to the number of splines or the AF measurement. if it makes it easier it's a tool i bought donkeys years ago for removing cylinder heads on ford pinto SOHC engines

I also have a set of them again bought donkeys ago nevr get rid you never know when they will come in handy.

Well I bought a set of splines... Sure enough it was 12mm that fitted, thanks ShineyDave. Removed the wheel and cowling, then started to look for the rattle thats been bugging me for months. Found it! Nothing to do with the wheel or column... it was the panel under the dash! not been fitted back properly and the metal clip by the centre tunnel was the rattle!! Happy now all quiet.

and I now know how to take the wheel off
