350BHP how do I get more

Post by Paulm » Sat Sep 02, 2006 3:39 pm

Ok I reckon my car must be close to 350bhp. How do I get more without changing the turbos? I can be bothered taking the engine out yet.

My car is stage 2+ all the usual bits done, no cats map etc.

I was thinking NA Heads, NA cams are they diff or better than S4 or would RS4 cams be they way to go. RS4 cams are bound to be like hens teeth though.

Would NA heads change the compression Ratio?

Can they be changed with engine insitu

RS4 intercoolers

Any more suggestion? Not NOS though I want constant power

The first thing would be a kko4 job , then rs4 i/c's , then rs4 head's . 2.4 n/a head's only are good on big power high reving engines. All of this work will require the engine removal..

@ Paul

I would look for an RS4 engine. Save you a bit of cash. It has the right compression, nice flow heads and good Intake with K04's already. With a decent flowing exhaust and a good map (MRC obviously ;o) you will get over 450bhp straight away. Knowing what I know now, that what I would do... if you can find one, they arent that expensive anymore.

Cheers

just noticed NA cams? do they have the correct overlap i would have thought they would have more overlap than turbo cams or something,, just a thought to check before doing that

Paul the first step stg 2+ is cheap gets you interested then its direct wallet injection after that mate :( i don't think i'll go to this extent again seeing how much i'm spending in hindsight its be better off aiming for something close to the factory output than doubling it

Hmmm...I have seen a couple available in the last 6 months although they sold extremely quickly. I phoned for both, last time about 3 months ago. Havent been looking lately for obvious reasons. Even at 6k, and if its good - its not to be dismissed if you are looking to power up an S4 you dont get much for that kindda money IMHO.

Check this http://www.totsteile.ch/navigation/index_teile.html

Best if you speak German....seen a few pop up there.

Thanks for the advice.

Not sure what direction I will take. It looks like I have done the easy stuff now and from now on it will be time consuming and expensive.

I think the short answer here is that you are looking at engine out to do anything else decent. Whether you decide to go down the new turbo or new engine route is neither here nor there as your engine will have to come out anyway. An FMIC might get you upto 370 ish but that is assuming you are running 350bhp now and I'm only guessing the new figures but in fairness that'll cost you more or at least the same as removing the engine etc

Try Nitrous...? Not everyone's cup of tea but perhaps an option...certainly the cheapest pound for pound by a long way. £500 will buy you 200bhp extra.

I think it may just stay as it is unless the turbos give up. Looking at 5 to 6k for an engine then all the other bits I am prob more than half way to an RS4.

I think your right Paul

I'm going as far as Modded Airbox, RS4 coolers, gutted RS4 downpipes, Milltek exhaust and remap. Beyond that I think I would save a little more and get an RS4

I have to say unless a failure such as a turbo failure turns your hand forcing you to replace, making the upgrade comparativly efficient, it sounds like you have gone as far as I would deem ecomomic.

There is a lot to be said for if you want a faster car, buy a faster car. I have followed this advice myself in the past, twice. Both car changes took me up near enough 65BHP each time. Nether could have been easily tuned to get that power. One I tried and failed.

I'm now here. B5 S4. RS4 would have been about £11-£12K more. I have 320-330 BHP for £600 outlay on top of the stock car. That's economic.

Unless forced, I will not plow £5k+ into the S4. Not with an RS4 so close. That's me though. Given you want more power without engine out, I think perhaps we think more similarly than some of the more power hungary S4 drivers here!

That said, if I were to buy a B5 RS4, it would be on stage 1 in a matter of weeks.

I am pretty much where you are now... and I am thinking to either buy an RS4 and sell the S4, or else ditch the whole performance game and get a diesel. Tough one

very tough call.....I run hybrids and lots of power....but I'm used to it already and want more now. it is addictive and to be honest - how much power is enough....?

try the nitrous! if that doesnt give you enough extra temporary power then its time to admit to yourself that nothing short of an F1 car will cure the power addiction! well possibly some of the race bikes out there, but I think that might be at the expense of life expectancy! one way to keep the S4 feeling fast is to buy a 1.0L corsa or equivilent for daily driving and keep the S4 for weekends, the relative difference will surely keep you smiling (and save you money on fuel)!

I am going to try not to go beyond re-map, milltek, gutted pre-cats and uprated intercoolers
