Oil change - advice needed on somewhere local

Post by misternomer » Fri Sep 01, 2006 12:26 pm

I've trawled the fora and can't get close to an answer on this one.

I've ordered an oil filter, plug, gasket and air filter. All I'm missing is the oil. I'm loathe to do the change myself simply because it's messy and I'm too lazy to do such a simple job without ramps or a drain can etc.

I talked to ...Kwik-Fit in Mitcham earlier and they quoted !!£40!! for a Mobil 1 change including filter. This sounds just dead wrong to me. They also won't fit parts that are not their own...and may not have parts in stock today. I don't believe them ...surely that way too low.

I'd like to get this done today for peice of mind. Any friendly independent mechanics with Mobil 1 in the barrel between Wimbledon and West Kent?

Should I just give the wank-spanners at KF a try and report back my findings. Or can anyone suggest with a local garage who might have heard oif a torque wrench.

OK - Interesting. Here's how to get a Mobil 1 0-40w oil change for £20.00

The guilt of running around with dirty oil got to me and I visited Kwik Fit down the road over lunch.

Conversation went something like this

"I can't fit somebody elses filter - more than my job's worth and I haven't got one in stock.

"Pretty please - it's from the Audi main dealer right next door. You'll see it's the same part No when you take it out."

"Oh alright then - but you can't have a reciept for the work."

"Fine"

I watched him do the job very carefully, he let me stand beside him under the car. Not the most competent mechanic in the world, and he did spill a lot of the oil while draining (it came out side ways and caught him out). But I watched him change the filter and pump 7.5l of Mobil 1 from a clearly marked drum.

He said he couldn't charge me the full £39.99 as it was my own filter and drain plug- so let's call it £20.00 cash.

I didn't watch to see if he put the note in the till when he left. Though I'm sure he did.

Next oil change in £5k miles. I know where I'll be going.

That sounds about right. He said it was 6.8l when it was half way up the dipstick. At the max line it was reading 7.3.

I use quickfit reguraly for oil changes absolutely no probs at all although i do know the manager, the reason they insist on their own sourced oil filters is to cover them against claims..hence no receipt.
They do use quality Mobil oils which are bought in bulk hence i cannot buy a filter and oil for what they charge i do not have to crawl under the car and get <beep> up nor do i have to get rid of the remains!!!
Not saying every quick fit is the same but our local one is ok.

Just did mine (exactly the same method and experience as misternomer) and it took 6.8l to three-quarters of the way up the dipstick. I drove around for the last thirty miles or so with engine flush in there, so the old oil was *filthy* when it hit the guy ...

Bizarre that Mobil 1 oil change including filter (if you get it from them) costs less than you can get the oil wholesale. Guess they make their money from smaller engines or that other chip fat they use.
