Gearbox
Having now driven some 2,000 miles in my RS6 I am noticing some interesting noises from the gearbox. These may be typical to the RS6 but thought I might ask.
When the car is cold the gearbox is quite noisy when selecting a gear, i.e. clunking noises on selection of 1st or Reverse. It gets a bit better when warmer but not much.
Also, when manually selecting gears (when the gear lever is over to the right) if I hold 2nd gear and come off the accelerator there is a small clunk and when coming back on the accelerator there is a louder clunk. It almost feels as if a prop shaft is loose or what i would call a universal joint has a lot play in it.
Are these symptoms normal for you guys as well?

RE: Gearbox
I get it really bad changing down from 5th to 4th after running on the motorway, sometimes a big clunk, sometimes its fine.

RE: Gearbox
I can't say I've noticed any clunking noises with mine. Some jerkiness perhaps on kickdown from 5th to 4th on the motorway, or changing down to 1st instead of 2nd at too high a speed at a junction, but definitely no loud clunks.

Re: Gearbox
Sometimes similar I suppose but nothing of significance; I am coming up to 50K service shortly and I queried a price for treating my car to fresh gearbox oil but was told that you dont change the gearbox oil... ever!!! I find that rather hard to believe, anyone else queried this?AntS4 wrote:When the car is cold the gearbox is quite noisy when selecting a gear, i.e. clunking noises on selection of 1st or Reverse. i had mine changed at MRC at the same time as the remap was done and it made a big difference to the smoothness of the gearchange. I would deffinitely get it done if i where you....it can only benefit the car to remove the old oil and swarf that must accumilate over the miles.

It seems ridiculous not to change the gearbox oil from time to time. Honest John's always going on about it.............so it must be right.
My 6+ has done 34K and occasionally clunks when changing, random times really and has done since new. Never given me any cause for concern as it's only ever gentle unless in sport mode. First auto I've had so not quite sure what to expect.

Car was in for service today, had agreed reduced price of £100 (cheers Bayliner) for fresh gearbox oil, but when I collected the car it turned out that when they went to change the oil they found that the gearbox sump had corroded and developed a small leak... Booked in for return visit to repair gearbox under warranty and as a result they will change the oil under the "warranty claim". Thankfully this has avoided a potentially siezed gearbox and also saved me £100.
Am very very very glad I had agreed the un-scheduled oil change, although they would probably have spotted it as part of the service, they equally might not have! Particularly as we inspected the underside of the car only a fortnight ago at the dealer looking for hydraulic fluid leaks and never spotted any problem.

Feels better with fresh juice... is noticeably smoother.
Although when I collected the car, I opened the boot to find that my belongings were pinned to one side... Put it this way, in owning my car for a good while and for well over 20,000 miles; I have never driven that "hard" that my spare wheel and stuff is pinned to one side of the boot. I fear that a junior techie at the dealers has taken my car for a less than considerate test drive

Re: Gearbox
Following on from this thread I enquired with my dealership about when the gearbox oil should be replaced and like you they came back and said that it wasn't listed on any of the service procedure and that the oil definetely wasn't long life oil.SteveH wrote: Sometimes similar I suppose but nothing of significance; I am coming up to 50K service shortly and I queried a price for treating my car to fresh gearbox oil but was told that you dont change the gearbox oil... ever!!! I asked them to replace the oil when it was in having the isofix fitted and shocks replaced ... so 10l of ATF oil (part number VG052162A2) later and £158.23 inc VAT later the beast is running along nice and smoothly ... well worth doing in my opinion if your past the 50k mark mileage wise.
Seriously surprised that it isn't part of the Audi servicing regime.

Ive done approx 30,000 miles in my RS of the 60,000 in total and only noticed a slight clunk in gear change from 1st to 2nd in drive recently.
yesterday the gearbox whent into limp mode and Audi will be having a look tommorow, i hope i wasnt being complacent when hearing and driving with a slight clunk from the gearbox.
i hope its not down to a lack of changing the oil. ill let you know the findings!

Rich, likewise I would have thought a gear box oil change would have been mandatory !
