It is interesting that a few of you say you have "no problem". This makes me wince a little. Because I can't help but think How do you know? While you might not see a warning light or increased oil temp etc or hear a rattle on start up, that is not to say you are not prematurely wearing your engine through a slightly incorrect grade of oil.
There is some pretty clever science behind the stuff and I can't simply change from the manufactures recommended grade unless I see some real evidence.
So for now I'm sticking with what's in the book ie. only oil meeting the VAG spec.
OIL and Oil Filter questions for RS4
I don't think you need to be afraid of Mobil 5w-50, although I doubt you'll see it in your cold climates anyway.
Mobil 5w-50 meets VW 505 00 specifications, which appears in your owners manual, at least in Australian cars.
I think the confusion also arises due to Audi's long life service intervals and the special oils that are used for that.
I notice most of these are a 0w-30 grade oil, so you might be wince when you see the the 5w-50 because it looks so different but that's just silly.
I notice other Audi oil recommendations include 0w-40 and 5w-40 weight oils.
Obviously the 0w oils are much better in below zero climates on cold start ups and if anything they are thinner than the 5w- oils, although I doubt you'd notice any change in oil pressure during normal driving conditions, although you might get marginally better horse power out of the 0w-40 at high RPM.
You may still not be happy because of the 50 weight but all this means is that it maintains viscosity at higher temperatures, wont thin out as much, but it doesn't mean it is thicker than a 5w-40 at normal temperatures.
