I think that the first thing you need to decide what you'll be using the car for. On the track the 993T will be spectacular. When you get it you wont need to mod it although you could get yourself to 500HP and beyond if you wanted to. But the brakes =, suspension and engine in its stansdard form are up to it.
So you have an RS4 - not sure what state of modification it is in (think the profile needs to be updated mate [img]images/graemlins/033102bigblink_1_prv.gif[/img]) but I do know that if it is standard you're looking at c£7K to bring it up to spec in the handling, braking and performance department. But once completed you'll have a car which can do almost what a 993T does in the performance department but with a far greater degree of practicality.

Completely agree with Joshie on this.
The biggest difference is in terms of practicality, and therefore intended use. Having driven a well sorted 993 and then gone into the RS4 I found the standard 4 lacked the cohesion and balanced nature of the C2, but once the 4 had been AMD'd to stage 2, with Mov'it F&R brakes, and Quattro suspension pack, it evened things up somewhat. Whether the RS4 with stage 2 would compare dynamically with a 993 TT I don't know?
You're right about attention gathering, the 911 does a lot more of it than RS4. The difference is that in the RS4 people stop and speak to you. In the Porsche only other Porsche drivers ever try to speak to you, everyone else suspects that you may be a footballer or somthing, it is quite a different experience.

and 3.00 TDi Allroad (AMD Chipped to 280BHP but don't tell my wife!)

Can’t agree with you there Charles, I own a 996TT, an RS4 and an Elise and of the three it’s the Porsche that causes more people to come over for a friendly chat – probably because nobody is ever likely to mistake me for a footballer! It’s never happened to me in the RS4, which as Ernie says is good from the parking outside point of view. On the road it’s the Elise that gets most attention from school kids etc., probably because it’s red.
Also don’t agree that the GT2 is the ultimate 911, the Turbo + Powerkit makes a much better road car, same engine + 4wd and it’s faster to 60mph according to Autocar (3.79s v 3.9s).

I think I am swaying towards the Porsche as saw a very nice car yesterday (with 430 bhp power kit).
The question now would be, what would be a reasonable price for me to be offered for my RS4 (specs posted earler). The dealer prices seem to be hovering around 40k. The dealer with the Porsche offered 35k as part-exchange. Seems a bit low as that would mean I have lost 7 k in 12 months!

The old shape 964's were amazing. The one in bad boys was the second generation turbo model, which had the "turbo 3.6" badging. It was a lot better than the initial, slightly underpowered version. The ones to go for though were the Turbo RS, and the RS 3.8. Two real beasts. The Turbo RS was an uprated turbo version basically, with the most ridiculous arches as you can see here and the 3.8 was a naturally aspirated version of pretty much the same car. That famous hard sound of the flat six, especially with the air cooling, was even more accentuated by the 3.8. You really could hear it sucking away like all the hookers in Amsterdam at once. It's an acquired taste, but I love it.

Is the populace becoming more Porker friendly then? Had two 911's on the trot a while back - a Carrera followed by the 3.3 turbo. We are travelling back a decade here... and I met with nothing but hostility - well that and a lot of tramlining under heavy braking! I was young back then though... yes younger and more virile.
