I was considering a budget all-in-one system. I can get the Sony DAVS880 multiregion system with the speakers for about £550 inc from a web-based retailer. Anyone know how good this system really is? I have heard that it is good but I suppose it would be way off a separates setup. I am not an audiofile and only run through a 32" Widescreen Sony CRT.

I think the new all-in-one dvd/amp/surround kits are very good value for money, sony have been around for ages and you should have any problems with them.

Have you had a demostration of a dolby digital home cinema setup? if not then you will find this as a first system very good indeed, but if you have heard of some systems and have high expectations you may want something more upmarket.

Its all about what you want.

They certainly are good value! I have dolby pro logic at the moment but while the fidelity is quite good, it does lack bass and punch in the mid-range. Playing DVDs through the Playstation 2 is getting on my tits too as I have to do a swap trick to play multiregion. I didn't manage to get the super mod chip frm www.playstatiomods.com before Sony forced them to stop marketing it.

Can't afford to get a decent separates system! I am an Engineer so my wages are quite naff and most of my residual income goes into the car

One of my mates just bought the "Sony DAVS880 multiregion system with the speakers".

Looks real neat, the image appears good on a Toshiba projector + big screen and no prob with the sound.
Although it's not in the league of systems made of dedicated components from Yamaha/Onkyo/JBL/etc.

Just like my own Boston Acoustics Dolby Digital pack (amplifier built-in in the subwoofer, remote control panel in the central speaker) : it's just a different world than any normal TV sound and you do get the dolby digital effect, and plenty of power to annoy the whole street.
The money I saved from a large dedicated Dolby Digital system, I put in buying a Philips 42" Plasma which really blows over a standard TV.

FYI, the Sony DAVS880 or Boston Acoustics aren't good as a real hi-fi system if your music collection is important to you (nor any of these integrated systems).
HINT : you'll need to spend a hell of money in a 5.1 system if you want it to be superb in standard hi-fi stereo music.

So don't plan to throw away your old system if it's a good one. Which means you'll be keeping the speakers from both systems in the living room.
Thus small systems with Bose-size speakers are cool : they can fit around the room quite discretly, and for less than 500 GBP (and down to 300 GBP for decent entry-level), they're just plug-and-play on top of your current DVD player, and there you go.
No hassle.

Go and check out B&O's TV CRT offerings, I think you may take back the Plasma TV blowing on CRT's comment :P

Sure B&O aint cheap, but after seeing a friends I've concluded its the best possible picture from ANY TV i've seen, plasma inc.

OH, and nearlly as thin as a plasma
