It's not that I feel a need for the lights - it the fact they don't work and they should, and it's such a basic feature the fact it has me stuck is now a challenge I can't loose!!

RE: Now I have the diagram....
Thanks Dave.
If anyone has alternative diagrams to the one show, maybe with just different component wording, somehing that might give a clue etc, I would really appreciate it.
I think perhaps the diagram I have is for a facelift car and mine is pre FL.

Still bugging me! .............
The wire loom coming from the lamp seems to go up behind the relay panel into or past the "bridge" to the left of the relay marked 267.
Any ideas?
Does the relay panel look right for a pre-facelift car - in terms of that bridge really. It looks like it is meant to be, but I have never seen a connection like this!
TIA
Graham

RE: Still bugging me! .............
Is that an empty, but modified, relay socket to the left of 267? Whatever it is, I'm pretty certain it didn't leave the factory like that.

It does not have a relay, but it has a different front and what I can only describe as a bridge connecting two of the points.peterb wrote:Is that an empty, but modified, relay socket to the left of 267? Whatever it is, I'm pretty certain it didn't leave the factory like that.
My first reaction was much the same as yours, I wondered if this was a "broken" relay, a bodge or somehow connected to my problem. However, I have searched for pics of relay boxes and found another earlier Audi with such a similar looking connection. The trouble is it could be as it's meant to be or it could be the bottom of a broken relay with the bottom plastic piece and one connection left!
What I could really do with is the assistance of another pre face lift owner to tell me if theirs is the same or not...........
Know anyone I could PM to help me out that might not have seen this thread? Come on pre facelift owners together now

Having looked at an identical year S4 (thanks KayGee) I know know this connection is normal. My investigated draws a blank!

Solved.
Thanks to ShineyDave, and I mean a big thanks, this mystery is now solved.
Dave has spent hours of his time scouring wiring diagrams with me and finally resorted to pulling his car apart to get to the final conclusion.
My red door open or door warning lamps were also not working.
The problem was entirly the +ve feed as applying +ve feed from elsewhere fired all the lights into action.
We figured the time delay feature on the interior lights cuts the ground, while the footwell/red door lights time out by cutting +ve.
Anyway. The relay no. 382 mentioned earlier in this thread is the one I required. However, it's not the one shown in the pic (a few posts above) of my relay box. There is another relay panel behind this one. I had over looked this panel as mine is entirly empty (was) - apart from the contacts that the missing relay should have been in. It was position one, just as the diagrams and my Audi parts man had said.
The pic below is of Dave's car. It's the black relay above the one marked 373. Remember my relay board is empty, or it was.
Anyway, it turned out to be as simple as that. Now I have the red door lamps working and the foot well lights, I think it was really wortwhile doing, not to mention the satisfaction of resolving something that was bugging me.
I personally think that relay was missing from factory - I think all S4s were meant to have this feature and with what looks like an unmolested, example............but I will never know.
Thanks again Dave. Hope this helps someone else.
