I know. The best conversation is normally the one:

You: "Is that the right part?"
Monkey: "Not sure sir."
You: "Can I change it if it's not?"
Monkey: "No sir, it's a 'special order part'"

Nice.

yup, the wife went looking for the black trim at the bottom of the rear bumper not knowing it's a one piece bumper. that didn't dissuade the parts guy from getting one off the shelf. his parting shot was "unfortunately it's a special order part so if it's wrong you can't bring it back"

guess what, it was wrong, and guess what, they did take it back after she pointed out that she couldn't possibly have asked for the wrong part if the part doesn't exist. and as for special order, they had the thing sat there before she walked in, Madam ZaZa, Audi parts technician, knows all, sees all

The best thing is when you phone them up and ask them for a part for a 1998 Audi S4 2.7 turbo, AGB engine code and even give them the part number and they ask you for a chassis number. A local-ish Audi dealership did this to me 3 times.

Oh well...

I think you guys are being unreasonable you can't possibly expect parts people to no all products for all vehicles, although I am irritated by them just like yourselfs.

I have never had a problem with my local dealer parts departments. I must be lucky.

I called vagparts for the first time ysterday and I thought they where excellent information really good. I came back to Audi after 3 years with Porsche and the main reason was service I recieved, funny enough the previous dealers i have purchased from (Executive Audi St Albans & Scotts Berkely Sq) have now both closed. Anyway only had car 2 weeks so will report later.

but when you give them the car model and reg number you would expect them to be able to pinpoint the model and spec from their database. from that info they should be able to check whether they are supplying the correct part, in my wifes case they supplied a lower trim for a standard A4. with the prices they charge i'd expect that the guy behind the counter has at least enough common sense to see that part isn't listed for an S4

I've never had much success with any parts dept. Audi or otherwise. On the subject of your expansion tank ash318..... I'm pretty sure that it was a recall item, so if you've had problems with it, it should have been supplied and fitted free of charge. It certainly was on mine anyway.
