Selling and the testdrive

Seems to be a big insurance hole at present regarding the test drive on a private sale. Prospective buyer will be covered 3rd party only by his own ins. (providing got DOC extension) but to get complete cover ie the car itself , you need to add buyer as named driver to sellers ins. (at cost of course)

Do peeps think its unreasonable to refuse a testdrive when selling a car of reasonable value / high performance unless the purchaser gets themselves covered at their own expense.

Absolutely! One of the benefits of selling the car back to the trade (usually as a trade-in).

I think it's perfectly reasonable to expect that if they want to drive the car (rather than be taken for a ride) that they cover the insurance cost (unless it's something like £10 - then it's not worth the bother)

From my point of view, whether they insure the car or not, they do not get a test drive! Whats happens if they crash your pride and joy, devalue the car once repaired and then don't buy it ?????? They can sit shot gun and inspect the car, but they are not having a go

I suppose a genuine buyer can test drive! I'm just concerned if they crash it/damage it and don't purchase it ......

i've had this issue before when selling bikes which are more of a problem as sometimes it's impracticle to take the prospective buyer in the back (i'm only 5'7 and 10 stone) i've agreed to a test drive only on completion of the sale, once i have the cash in my pocket they can have 20 mins or so to check it's as described. at least that way you know they're a serious buyer and if they sling it down the road you've already got the cash.
