Ridiculous idea, nobody is going to believe it is a diesel for one minute - go for a 1.8 badge instead

I picked the car up last night and continued to re-map with Mihnea but I had to cut it short to go home therefore we have a few problems outstanding – these are:

1) Car idling lumpier than we would like
2) Car very lumpy and surging at low rev cruising (1st/2nd gear in traffic say) in any gear (more noticeable in low gears)
3) The car wont run any timing at high revs (over 6k approx)
4) Surging when coming off throttle in any gear (more noticeable in lower gears)

The car drives different to before, the lag is noticeable but not any more than expected. in current guise she is brutal over 3.5k revs and this will only get better when the timing is fixed. The car is still very driveable in that the boost is more progressive than with K03. So all in all I am very happy and once the teething problems above have been resolved, I’ll be ecstatic.

In the absence of any other obvious fault we were concerned that either the fuel in car had gone off or that one of the cats may have collapsed. I have taken the car away to run some decent fuel through her and if this helps then I’ll go back up for the final re-mapping, failing that, it may be the cat(s). I have not done any timed runs yet as neither MRC or myself are 100% happy, but with some perserverance, we’ll get to the bottom of the issues. Of course all this info and knowledge will benefit MRC and any other S4 owner wanting to do the upgrade….I’ll keep you posted

Nice... exciting time!! Sounds like there is a beast waiting to be let out :P - would love to be a passenger! Good luck with it all, I hope that your problems are nothing more than poor fuel!

Rob, if you figure out the timing problem let me know. Mihnea also couldn't run much timing
when I had my pre-cats gutted (I have RS4 IC's as well) and blamed the fuel (Optimax). I am going
to have a go at fitting a catch tank to see if that helps.

Jonny - Catch tank?

The car ran well with the pre-cats gutted alough we never checked the timing, but I do recall her being better higher up revs immediately after. Anyone got some miltek downpipes aor sport cats for sale...?

Apparently oil blow by through the PCV system can cause
detonataion. My car is pretty high miles (106k), a bit like
yours, and my nearside intake is often pretty oily.

Going back to the good old days. When running the Cossie most of the folks on the rs forum ran with a catch tank due to this prob. Including me. If didn't cause to much of a prob when running a stage 1 but over that with increased boost we got quite a bit of blow by resulting in a few engines letting go due to det.

so thats interesting probably a good idea to keep the pcv for oil pressure but have a catch tank along the line before it?

If we can all decide on the shape and the size of the catch tank, I can get some carbon ones made up.

Any thoughts? I guess the first thing is working out where to take the pipe from.

Sorry, is this going off topic?
