Post by lukeaharper » Tue Jun 20, 2006 9:25 am

Hello everyone.

I'm just trying to gather as much info as possible about the Audi A4 1.8 Turbo Quattro.

I would be interested in any personal reviews from anyone that has driven/owned one, any modifications people have done or suggest and any general comments really.

Thanks.

Welcome Luke!

I think you'll find there's a few members on here who have moved up to an S or an RS from this sort of car, so you may get some feedback.

The 1.8T quattro Sport is the one to go for - 180bhp and lots of extras.

The basic 1.8T engine has been a superb mid range engine for Audi for over 10 years, and is very tunable.

Thanks clive.

I've heard it is a very nice vehicle.

I was not sure if the unit produced 150 or 180Bhp?

Also I believe the last model (which I forgot to mention, I'm talking 97-01 version) was made in 2001, is that right anybody?

Might be talking out of my ar*e here...but aren't the 1.9TDi or 2.5TDi's a bit quicker? Gob fulls of torque although they might not have the topline bhp they'll still cruise at respectable speeds (ooooh would that be 70mph in the UK?). Sorry to mention the "D" word....althought he R10's did very well at le Mans at the weekend.

I've had a diesel before and wouldnt really want to go back there. The torque is nice at low rpm, but you cant beat a petrol engine sound and the longer rev range.

The original model was 150bhp, but the quattro sport was tuned to 180bhp.

You can go a lot futher than that of course - it's the same basic lump that's in the 180 and 225 TTs and the S3.

So I've heard. Wanted to know if anyone on here has tuned one themsleves and what results were achieved.

Potential to keep up with a stock 2.7 S4?

Would have thought so, but you'll need to bang a K04 in there along with a bigger intercooler (in fact, I think the 225 models had a pair?) to achieve that.

Then you'll start thinking about the brakes and suspension...and before you know it, your £6k dream car just cost you £10k!

K04? Whats one of them when it's at home then? Something to do with the turbo?

£10K to achive results to match that of a £40k car when new, I'll sleep nicely with that! Spent more money on a diesel mitsubishi!

But you could buy an S4 for that sort of money and then some simple mods would take it from stock 265bhp to over 300bhp.

K04 = bigger turbo (as used in the B5 RS4)

With £10k you could get yourself a nice B5 S4, but with a nice insurance premium to match at your tender age...

But modding the 1.8T to the same performance as an S4 will surely load the premium almost to the same level?

Then there is the time off road whilst the car is being modded and possible reliability issues?
