Oil

Post by rsvirgin » Fri Jun 09, 2006 4:15 pm

Hi everyone, thanks very much for your brake suggestions I think I have got them sorted via Specialist Cars of Malton, should be good! At least they were a hell of a lot less than a certain well known "Audi Specialist" and much more polite too!!

However, I need to change the oil and filter but can't seem to get a difinitive answer.

The car has done 179k km (presumably hard) and runs perfectly but I want to look after her. Any give a decent bit of advice or definited no-nos please. I think the garage is going to put 10w 40 Shell semi synthetic in, is this any good?

Thanks

Fully synthetic only. The high temperatures of a high power turbo 5 pot engine means semi will break down and fail to protect. Stand your ground on this one !
Then views differ. I have used all sorts however Motul V300 5-40w seems to suit the car well with no XS use and its a true synthetic.

My car has only had Mobil 1 in since new - originally I used the 0-40W Mobil1 but I'm now using the 15W- 50W rating Mobil 1.
Can't say I've noticed much difference - possibly slightly quieter engine noise on the Motorsport Mobil 1. Other than the typical slight blue smoke on startup when the car has been left unused for a couple of weeks I get virtually no oil usage.

I have used 10w60 Millers for the past few years quite happily. I have noticed quite a few people are moving to 10w50 silkolene on the S2 Forum and having read the evidence I think I will follow their lead next oil change.

for too much info read here: http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13376

Sorry if this adds to the confusion.

As I said views differ !
@ scillyisles I have used mobil 15-50w which was quieter but consumption rose and the car now feels much better with Motul V300 5-40w and no 'blue smoke'
@ Angus the silkolene may well be the ideal compromise with its true fully synthetic and viscosity range. We shall see !
