Attempted car theft from parent's drive.

Post by Gekko » Tue May 16, 2006 9:29 am

We live next door to my parents. Currently we're having our drive done and some perimeter walls/railings built. We've been parking our cars next door for the last 2 weeks: Golf V6 4-Motion & Audi A3 3.2Q. Lats night, 4 thieves were involved in breaking entry to my parent's house in an attempt to get the keys to these cars. 1 lad was outside on the pavement keeping watch, the 2 others were ready by our cars. A 4th came running outside of the house trying to unlock the cars but he'd only got the key's to my mum's Golf 1.6. Alarm was going so they pegged it. I'd already called the police and thankfully 2 of the tossers were caught during a chase when they rolled the car... no keys recovered though. When I went round, the front UPVC door had been smashed through by broken seals and the second porch glass door had also been smashed. Now I'm very dubious about getting my RS4 in a few weeks. Is it really worth owning one if it brings so much risk with it? I've got a young family and I don't intend to lose anyone over a bleeding car.

Any advice?????

Sorry to hear that and glad knowone was hurt.

The only cure is to either buy a cheap car, or move house.

Sorry to hear that too, that's two posts today about this! http://www.rs246.com/index.php?name=PNp ... ic&t=53934

Security cameras are one other option - expensive and ugly but would certainly deter... Big gates too.

I live in the sticks, and have a few toys. If anyone comes here uninvited to harm me my family or my property I will shoot them without a seconds thought.

I'm also getting quotes to have a 'stinger' installed, half way down the driveway that can be operated from the house. Let them get away then up pop the spikes...

It's a sad state of affairs when one is reticent about buying themselves nice things because of fear of the criminal element.

I live in a quiet cul-de-sac, the cars (well, two of them - the MR2 lives on the drive) are garaged, and the house alarmed/monitored.

Although we have had a couple of incidents in the road, our cars have never been touched.

I'm waiting for free site survey for my house as well as my parent's next door, from ADT. They're probably going to be very expensive but I think it's worth it as we've now experienced 2 break-in's within 2 years. Is that who you're with?

Nope, we're with a small local company - 'A' Solo

The system was installed by the house builders.

You need a garage for sure!! I never leave my car on my driveway, always locked in the garage with alarm.....There is not much you can do try not to leave it front of your house. Be vigilant but not paranoiac :?

an insurance agent friend of mine told me he advised people to leave cars on a driveway, in a garage there's plenty of opportunity to work on the alarm systems and immobilisors whereas in a drive they're much more visible

If that's the case, I wonder why insurance companies reduce the premiums for cars which are garaged?

god knows but it sort of makes sense that if they're in the open there's more chance of the perps being spotted. i must stress that it was his own opinion. in anycase a garage doesn't afford that much protection anyway. i've heard of cases where roofs have been taken off to gain access.

Get a big dog. Not a complete deterrent but i know a few people that have had this happen to them. None of them have had dogs. The people i know with a dog hvnt had their cars touched. Even if they stop the dog. It will have done its job by alerting you that something is wrong. Also i think if you have neighbours close by. Park it on the street. Unless theve been watching they wont know which house to go to for the keys.

Just noticed this old thread while doing a bit of browsing. I'd advise the author of this thread to remove his stated intention of 'shooting them' as if the worst does happen he'll be unable to claim reasonable force in self defence. I'll do likewise when it gets edited.

Wouldn't want to see someone doing a but of justice get punished for it like Tony Martin.

Sorry to hear of the probs. Don't let it put you off getting your car though.

You can always get a Clifford Alarm or other manufacturer with an anti-jacking system as part of it? If they break into your house and nick the car they'll not get too far...but probably far enough not to worry about coming back.

Yes sorry to hear about that,

I,m due to have a system fitted shortly to my vehicle that can be tracked and if u wait till the vehicle stops and once the ignition is switched to off it cannot be started again, it also has a microphone in it which records voice when a panic button is pressed, if your not there to activate the button you can set boundrys around your vehicle house or on road junctions motorway exits etc to alarm if they are breached.

a bit excessivei know but...............

how about getting Tracker fitted, if they're that persistant then if they turn up and threaten you then give them the keys and say oh its got tracker the boys in blue will be on your ass in a few minutes, your choice you either "F O " now or explain yourself to the police. Chances are they wont want a car with tracker following them back to their laird. Good chance a load of other stolen cars would be found as well??
