S3 cambelt problems

Post by johneroberts » Sat Mar 15, 2003 2:37 pm

I have been told by QST that the last couple of S3s brought to them have been noisy with cam belt problems likely to occur , and considering that a cambelt change is due until 60,000mls, and these are show problems at below 25,000 mls, cause for concern
So if your engine starts getting noisy from the sides, please get it checked, or you could end up like a customer of QST with a heafty bill on a engine rebuild.
Cheers

Thanks JR.

Just coming up to 53,000 miles now so might be worth getting it replaced before the next service.
I'll have a listen to my engine...

I posted before about my engine being noisy - possibly the tensioner belt - I have booked it into an Audi Dealer for an overnighter to check it out starting from cold...

and considering that a cambelt change is due until 60,000mls

Kim at QST was suggesting that it was every 120,000 miles (80,000 miles for 2.7 v6 biturbo engines). However I'd get it changed more frequently for peace of mind anyway.

I was at QST on Friday and Kim showed me the car - worrying indeed.

BTW, what are these rumours of a Revo'd S3 not running properly at the Donington trackday, John?

He had tyre problems (caught the corner of a kerb whilst trying to park, thus taking chunk out of tyre)

Funny how rumours spread.

Sorry, I was trying to be comical.

Got the car back from dealer today:

I complained of a clonking from rear of car going over speed bumps - been like that since new (9 months) - they have diagnosed new rear shocks (80% sure its the cause)

Also, for the clattery sound (intermittient) on startup or when cold - they are replacing the tappets!

Mitchell at Revo said it sounded like my tensioner belt which I told them but they have picked the tappets to be replaced

TBH I get the impression they are just earning warranty work

got the car back yesterday and according to the invoice they did this:

"Rectify slight tappet noise especially from cold. Replace number 1 inlet & exhaust cam followers"

Also rear shocks (initial tests indicate noise is worse!!!)

as an added bonus I have just discovered I have an oil leak now too feckers

car is now in dealer until at least Tuesday - it apparently had a leaking oil seal around the cam cover or something

I told them many times to go easy on my new brakes!
