mechanical lifters

i was chatting to an engine builder on audi-sport.net about achieving high rpm circa 8000rpm, he echo'd what Mihnea has told that hydraulic lifters will be the main hold back factor and that mechanical lifters for a more accurate timing would be ideal as hydraulic lifters are spongy, in lay terms it made perfect sense but not sure about reality specifically in 5 valve turbo engines, reading up on some sites hot and cold valve lash must be adjusted specifically for setup, just the mention of the topic got me thinking but i would like to be told by people in the know if it is more complication than its worth in terms of benefit or if this is totally viably and its done all the time.
i am a rev junky i know i'll push the engine can i make it more reliable to do that is the bottom line

I thought about this and I know someone who has done it with VW heads..... and in my opinion, I dont see that the additional revs have gven much of a benefit. I think revs help NA engine a lot but in this case the ability to rev to 8500 revs didnt really give any more power......in fact theres no evidence to say it gave any increase in power! All it gave was bragging rights really...... which isnt that cost effective!
Just with the layout of the V6 and the nature of the bore and stroke of the V6 it isnt really that well suited to silly high revs. If the bore were larger and the stroke shorter than that would be different.

Plus the heads would get a bit more noisy and clatter about. So all in all it wouln't make a commercially viable product and hence no ones done it really.....

oh cool so some people are doing ,

thing is i don't purely get pleasure out of power i have a lot of fun at high revs so its one thing my car must do just to put a smile on my face if nothing else so i am not worried completely in what power it gives it is mainly for the character of the car

yeah i know it is a longer stroke but i think it would be ok if lightened, and i've gotten over the worry of clattering noises

i presume the person you know used 20 valve 4 cylinder heads , i could definently use some advice from someone who has done this already could you ask him what lifters he used or give me contact info, web link i'm sure hes found out all the difficulties in the conversion and i would like to use his experience to get mine done
