Can Vagcom lock your keys in the car...?

Post by CliveH » Thu Mar 30, 2006 9:33 am

I was giving Shineydave a hand with Vagcom last night, and also ran a scan on my car so that we could compare results.

After running on my car, we disconnected the laptop and went back to his car to have another look, and left the keys in my ignition with the doors closed.

Went back to my car about 10 mins later and it had self-locked!
(Fortunately the spare key wasn't far away!)

Is this :-

1. a known problem of Vagcom?
2. a known problem that can be fixed with Vagcom?
3. none of the above!

Grateful for any help.

There are only 2 scenarios that I can think of that might cause the car to self-lock;

1. You have unlocked the car and not opened the drivers door (poss gone in through the pass door?) - the car will self lock after approx 2 mins.
2. There is a fault with the switch on the drivers door that isn't recognising the door opening and hence locking itself (which is part of the alarm system).

The only thing I can think of is the autolock on rpm.... If I do leave the keys in the ignition, which I do rarely, I tend to leave the window down just in case.

Thanks guys. Sequence of events, Nige, was :-

Unlock car with remote.
Open rear offside door (which was left open while using Vagcom).
Open driver's door to put keys in ignition, once Vagcom loaded.
Run Vagcom scan.
Exit and close all doors.

Engine was not run Phil.

i can confirm clives recollection of the event. if the door wasn't opened then the car should have self locked but obviously to get the keys into the ignition the drivers door had to be opened and in anycase we were in and out of the back of the car to interrogate the ecu with vag-com. we wondered if it could have been my remote by some fluke. either that or as clive mentions a glitch with vag-com. seems like we might have to try a controlled test at some point.

I got locked out of my old TT with the engine running!!

Luckily not too far from home but I still had to wait for a few hours guarding the car until the missus finished work and could fetch down the spare key, turned out to be a faulty switch inside the drivers door in conjuntion with the alarm...

What a nightmare; had this happen many years ago on a courtesy car, which then started to over-heat... ended up breaking the rear quarter-light to get into the car and turn it off, thought the dealer would prefer broken window to broken engine. Although bizarely he advised that the smaller window that we broke was more expensive that the drivers or passenger window as the larger ones are more commonly changed.

Lucky you had the spare keys. I remember years ago being told to always take the precaution of having an open window if you're working with the electrics, with doors closed and the keys in the ignition. I try never to close the doors without an open window for fear of exactly what happened to you.

Instead I managed to lock myself out of my house a while back :bash:
