Fitting AP Racing Brakes

I am buying a set of fron AP brakes for my RS4 from a friend. He is taking my standard brakes. I want to know how easy it is to swap them over and whether its something a semi-skilled person can do. Being a cheap git, I don't want to pay the dealer.

Questions:

1) Do the AP calipers bolt on the same way as the standard ones?

2) Is this the way to remove the whole assembly?
Remove Pads
Remove disk
Undo brake hose at chassis end
Unbolt calipers
Repeat in reverse to install AP

3) I realise that brake bleeding requires a specialist but will I be able to bleed them enough to get to an Audi garage

I know John Blade did this modification himself. Don't think he is on the forum much these days as he's sold his RS4, but perhaps you can try and PM him via a previous post?

Job should be relatively straight forward, the only bit I wouldn't fancy is the brake lines...and you do want to go for the stainless brakelines...

jimbogrey has ap,s on his S4 although he didnt fit them im sure he could tell u if they have any special need,s i.e brackets for fitment etc...

Hi Bob,still around but currently driving a P reg Golf Gti 8v...not no too much to report on.But yes the Ap Racing front brkaes conversation was money well spent.....difference was unbelievable and the fitting quite straight forward evenouthough I had my motorbike mechanic to assist.

Simple1 has AP's on his RS4 and he fitted them himself, so PM him for some guidance

If your not up for doing the job yourself then any respectable tyre and brake garage will be able to do this and it should caost you no more than £80. Forget the likes of Quick-Fit as they wont do any work with self supplied equipment, go for a good independant.

One word of warning with the AP kit..... Make sure you order in spare disks well before you actually need them, they don't seem to be an off the shelf item. I ended up with Aston Martin disks on mine, after making a fuss over the 6 week delivery time for the standard disks.

Hehe...sorry, didn't mean to come across so short !

I usually find bleeding comes as a side effect of doing any mechanical work on your car...usually it's from my knuckles !

There are also some shims that fit between the calipers and mounts to get things lining up properly

Justin - I think you'll need to do it in this order :-

Remove Pads
Undo brake hose at chassis end
Unbolt & remove calipers
Remove disc
Repeat in reverse to install new brakes

Whether you intend to replace the brake lines or not, I would have some on standby, because if the connections are seized on solid (due to corrosion), then brute force will only result in breaking the metal pipes.

Not a point you would want to get to on a Saturday afternoon (as we did) when your brakes are in bits. The only solution to this is to cut the brake lines out and fit new - depending on the severity of removal method, you may also need to use a pipe flaring tool to remake the nipples at the chassis end - not half as exciting as it sounds...!
