Aftermarket security

Post by Davey_B » Fri Mar 17, 2006 10:05 am

RS4 arrives this month :D and I'm searching and researching everywhere to find which is the best security system to fit. Imob, Cobra Tracker etc. etc. I really like the idea of being able to shut the car down remotely (Imob) has anyone got any experience of these systems?

I have a toad texter on mine, the car will send a text message to you if it's disturbed, you can set it up to switch a relay to immobilise by text as well, and can be activated by an external alarm if required, although I have not done this yet, very easy to fit, basic fitting is just three wires.
can also be used to locate car via another subscription - about £25 20 location requests via internet, although the location is not that accurate about 100 metre radius at best.

The immobilise by text is a goog hi-jack feature, just let them have the car and set it off a little while later, and if also rigged to a relay or two you could set of sirens, lights or even smoke if you are really paranoid, a mate has got that in his Noble.

I looked at Blackjax etc but would find it a pain to put in the sequence every time I got in the car.

Also The Toad is very cost effective costs about £199, less from Ebay

I have additional immobiliser and alarm and tracker on top of the standard security, but would also be interested in hearing more views on these remote products - seems many of the major brands do them now. Are you serious about smoke? Sounds very interesting, I presume some sort of poison could be added?

Cheers

not sure about the poison though, although a nice slow acting painful one would be good for the thieving scum

Remote immobiliser...sounds cool BUT what if there is a delay in text transmissions? I've known texts to take over 24 hours to arrive - only once or twice but could be the one time you need it? In addition what if the car were immobilised once the scum reached a reasonable speed - you could find your car left in a very awkward position on a main road and an accident. You know that this country is like, the scum would probably get legal aid to sue you!

I've heard that the blackjax thin (although sometimes pain to input a code) is a safe way of bringing the car to a halt.

My suggestion would be a tracker of some form (loads available at varying costs) and a decent aftermarket alarm, possibly with blackjax (Isn't that a Clifford thing?) for added safety.

GeezeerS4 - have you tried your text immobilisor, does it work? And how do you reactivate it again, is it something a professional thief might be aware of and get round?

Yes I have tried it and yes it works, can a professional get around it, of course as with any immobiliser you could trace the wiring (although it's all black not colour coded) and re-route, means taking out the dash though, would take a while.

To re-set you just send a re-set message to unit.

Note the unit will only respond to the mobile number that you tell it to, it will ignore any others, so even if you knew it's number you would get ignored.

So if my phone did get nicked with the car I just dial the units number from another mobile, if accompanied with my PIN it will ignore the first phone and listen to the new one, it sounds complex but it is really easy to use in reality.

Cool, thanks for that I'll have a look at it. I definitey think its the way, tracker etc. just takes too long for the police to find even with Echo or Horizon. Too many cars of this kind fitted with tracker are not found. I guess the only downside is if its lifted on a low loader, then you'd need tracker to find it.

Although, that said, the thieving scumbags are usually one step ahead. Can't you buy portable mobile phone jammers that would stop your phone receiving the text messages?
