Longer (no more?) time-limit on the Edit function

Post by Taipan » Tue Apr 08, 2003 3:16 pm

Per admin's suggestion, I'm re-posting this message from a thread in the RS4 forum:

===============================
On RS4.org (May Peace Be With Him ;-), the Edit function was not time-limited.

So one could erase/correct his post after the night had brought advice or a different light.

Any reason/possibility for RS246.Com to offer the same?
(it's seems to be limited to 30-60 min).

To registered members only, so another way to motivate registration.(hehe, Phil is going to love me again)
================================

Cheers,

this can easily be changed

however i think it should merely be extended to say 12 hours tops

The reasoning is that people can go back and make their posts apear differnt therefore throwing the thread out of sync

so i agree to a time limit, i can easily change it to say 4 hours instead of 30miins as it is currently set

lets see who else wants it changed
cheers

IMHO giving anyone the option to go back in time and change a post, confuses the hell out of me People should be responsible for their written word, and in some recent cases it may even encourage a certain few to read and think before they actually write and post

Imagine responses to a post that has been edited after that would be such a laugh - and would be a nightmare for all concerned. I sometimes base some investigations on a post that was made. If it was changed after I found the information

Pointless, ineffective, and a generally poor idea

Eric any instances you can foresee where this is actually needed?

30 mins max IMO - if you're too stupid to need longer, then you shouldn't have a keyboard or indeed be allowed to speak or mix with the general public unless under the strictest supervision.

Only "pissed" posts (about 400 of mine ) should be changed by Admin/Mods as and when required.

Hehe Andiroo, lots of people seemed plain stupid/ineffective/pointless/generally poor idea in the past 48 hours. Everything ok with your sweet noggy babe ?

As I said : "So one could erase/correct his post after the night had brought advice or a different light.".
Without getting an admin into the loop for doing so.

It's intended as a candid suggestion, as anyone can get carried away and I find it fair to give me/you/them a second chance within say 12 hours (I agree unlimited Edit time-out is not appropriate).

No instance I can foresee specifically but I admit that I did in the past, in a different environment, wished strongly I had never sent one particular mail and could have actually retrieved it out of the borderless and timeless electronic universe...
Nobody's perfect and written words can -unnecessarily- be the most hurting ones for both parties.

The problem I've found with the timed-out edit/delete feature is that I can't delete threads never intended for perminent occupation of bandwidth. Sometimes I post concepts or whatever that are rendered obsolete when a project is finalized ... so there's no reason for the initial posting to remain. But I can't self-moderate because the edit/delete feature is locked.

Also ... should you decided to allow users the ability to modify/correct/edit their posts at any point in the future (i.e., there's no time limit), you could just force edited threads to indicate they've been edited with a time/date stamp.

Hmmm, I think the time limit is a good thing. There is nothing worse than someone going back and editing the post and then the responses end up incomprehensible. Persoanlly, I think what you write should be what you mean, there is a preview function, and the editing should remain at a reasonable time, possibly 60 mins.

If anything out of the ordinary, needs changing then our 'new system' should enable this to happen.

Since I do not get to see the site every day and I often look at it late at night, my grammar is often poor even after allowing for typos. A long, if not unlimited edit function would be lovely.
I do hear about the need for self restrain.
