Only ever been in two porsche TT's, Rs4johns and Martin's x50 thingy.
Fook me they are quick....Absolutely no way an rs4 is keeping up with one of those babies....Ok so the cars I have been in are both modded to hell but Ive been out in seriuolsy modded rs4's and they are not putting down no where near as much imho.
Going against your mates on track or having a play with some dude on an empty stretch of road is no exact science by any means, far from it. There are so many variables in there I cant even be arsed to try listing some of them.

Too much is bad.
Plenty is better.

So a standard 911 turbo (996, 420bhp) has a power to weight ratio of about 272 bhp/ton.
A "reasonably" (by which I mean about 470bhp - not silly over 500bhp money) RS4 has about 290 bhp/ton.
Excluding extreme examples (in which case you'd have to compare more extreme RS4's too) I still don't see the denial here that an RS4 could hold it's own against a 911T in terms of straight line acceleration. I appreciate that gearing and drag play a big part here too, but that's what the extra power to weight is for

Mate just bought a standard manual 996 TT (420 brake, not an X50) and to be honest I dont think my stgIII + aquamist RS4 will keep up,certainly not past 100mph.....we havent gone up the road beside each other(yet) but initial impressions are that the Porsche has the legs on me......
Manual TT is supposed to be quite a bit quicker than the tiptronic though, perhaps that explains peoples different experiences?
Somebody ask Simon, he's got both hasnt he?

Maybe a VMAX or a Santa Pod would help answer the question. I don't know what transmission the one I went up against on the A1 had... but he was certainly trying.

...which is interesting as my modded RS4 is just as quick as my mate's E55 AMG. Weird.

quick to what speed though Clive?
unless you get to pull well into three figures its not much of an indication.
I met (on a private runway your honour) a chap with a 700bhp sequential gearbox R34 GTR, with the price of my car spent on engine mods.....I could stay there or thereabouts in traffic (the runway was busy) to 100mph,he seemed to pull about 1/3 of a car length a gear, but by the time the traffic cleared and the road opened up, at an indicated 150 he was at least 5 car lengths ahead and still pulling away.
I suppose what I'm trying to say is its not hard get the impression of having equal machinery if you stay under a ton, its above this speed that 996TTs, E60 M5s, AMG mercs etc really start to get into their stride......

Lets ask the question originator...VST wrote:quick to what speed though Clive?
Zorro - are you going to be head to head with your mate on the road (up to approx 100mph), the track or on some long straight test track where speeds well over 100mph are attainable?

"track challenge" page has some answers for B5RS4 vs Carrera S (997) not 4S.
http://www.track-challenge.com/main_e.a ... %26Car2=85
stock RS4 is a little faster than stock Carrera s (997) in acceleration up to 0-140km/h but slower beyond 0-160km/h.
Carrera 4S is heavier than Carrera S, and I believe that RS4 is faster than Carrera 4S (997) in acceleration up to 250km/h.
B5RS4 is slower than 911 turbo (996) in almost all comparison.

This link - http://www.track-challenge.com/main_e.a ... 0%26Car2=4 - comes closest to answering the orignial question, and as expected shows that a stock RS4 should have nothing to fear from a 911 Carrera.
