Help All 4 wheels buckled
Re: Help All 4 wheels buckled
Sorry to hear that Scottie. I don't think people in the rest of the U.K. let alone Europe appreciate how bad most of our roads are in central Scotland. However they are the normal roads in a country Audi have many dealers and target customers. A single bent wheel would say pothole (need to claim the Council) or kerb (user error). However as you say no other damage and it's all wheels therefore the only logical conclusion is that they are not fit for purpose in a market Audi target. Hopefully they will see sense and good luck.

They may have Hunter but are you sure it is Road Force with the roller that simulates the road. I know Bentley garages often have them but Audi? I doubt it.

Mine has the black optional wheels, as well.

Re: Help All 4 wheels buckled
Gareth sure does sound like the same symptoms
When it was in they re-balanced the wheels and it is slightly better. Still waiting for Audi UK feedback.
Got some nice silver weights on my nice black wheels right between the spokes

Re: Help All 4 wheels buckled
So possibly a bad tyre batch where the glue holding the foam has not worked and the foam has come away causing an imbalance in the tyres? This would explain the symptoms and why it hasn't always done it and why there is no visible damage to the wheels.
Re: Help All 4 wheels buckled
It would be a costly but interesting to completely change the tyres over to MPSS's or a non silent tyre and see if that solves the problem.s

Re: Help All 4 wheels buckled
It would be cheaper for Audi to provide 4 new tyres rather than wheels to try and eliminate the problem.
Or even just remove the tyres and check the foam in the tyre.

this is the unit they balanced the wheels with.
Not sure what it is.

Re: Help All 4 wheels buckled
When I had my car I hit a pothole really hard. I was braking really hard at the time so you can imagine the force of slowing from a biggish speed adding extra kinetic energy as I literally smashed into the pothole. It sounded like my suspension had collapsed. I had the wheel checked over a few days later and it was fine. Maybe it was a lucky escape but I'd say the wheels are tough and wouldn't say they can buckle easy.

Re: Help All 4 wheels buckled
I drove over a kerb in mine at low speed and burst both tyres on passenger side. I was convinced wheels or suspension would be damaged or buckled but apart from minor scrapes nothing wrong with them after 2 new tyres fitted. I've commented in the other thread about the foam as the "buzzing" has returned after hitting a pothole. It is an expensive fix but do wonder about putting Michelin MPSS on without the foam stuff. I want different wheels though if I'm doing that

Re: Help All 4 wheels buckled
Looks like that balancer has a roller so probably RF, albeit usually red.

Re: Help All 4 wheels buckled
Sorry to hear about your vibration issues. £5K is a fair spend if indeed buckled wheels are the issue. Why not get yourself down to tool station and buy a magnetic base and a dial indicator, chock three wheels, car in neutral, jack up the remaining wheel, set the magnetic base on the ground and indicator up such that it touches the rim and them turn the wheel manually and check for run out [magnetic base in this case is just to reliably hold the dial indicator rather than mount to a metallic surface]. I'd probably tape up the alloy where the dial gauge would run just to ensure no scraping. Easy to do and well worth it given the potential £5K bill! This is unlikely to show if the wheels are oval rather than buckled though.
I also recommend the MPSS over the Continental tyres (if that is what you have) as some of the handling issues are lessened, however I never had any vibration issues with the continentals.
Found this regarding how to do it on the inside of the wheel- using the "inner" side of the wheel you could also check for oval wheels.

Re: Help All 4 wheels buckled
I once hit a curb at 40mph going down Feltham high street at 2am. Both wheels up on the curb!
And those wheels, solid wheels, never going to buckle wheels.
Destroyed them!
poor Astra. I was only about 17 at the time.

Re: Help All 4 wheels buckled
That's a bloody good idea. It's usually not easy to see if the wheels deformed without it actually spinning on a ballancer in front of you.feeltheburn wrote:Sorry to hear about your vibration issues. £5K is a fair spend if indeed buckled wheels are the issue.
