My "New" RS4

Post by nf2029 » Wed May 17, 2017 4:50 pm

Hi guys,

Last Friday traded in my Seat Leon Cupra 280 Estate and picked up a 14 Plate RS4. The car I should have always bought!

I am absolutely loving it so far. However, once it was at home and had cooled down, I then had to jump in it to meet my wife from the station. When I started it it came up with a warning light saying Max. Engine Speed 6000 Rpm. I let the car idle and it went away. I removed the key from the ignition put it back in again and the warning did not reappear. The car also did not feel as if it was in limp mode or anything. The car has been running like a dream and I have almost done 500 miles in it since picking it up. Today however the light came on again when I fired it up. I did same trick as before but the light came on again on the second start. I called the dealer who I bought the car from and he said it maybe because the car is warming up (seems strange) and that they hadn't heard of it before (they are a performance Audi specialist). I was on my way to a meeting so carried on, however when I was crawling around the corner from my road the revs started hunting and dropped down to a stall when I stopped the car. I restarted. No warning. Drove off and again all fine. Does anyone have any ideas what this could be? It is going back to dealer for diagnostics but I just wanted to see if anyone had experienced similar. Car has not done 36,000 miles yet...

Congrats on the car.

With the RS4 you can't rev it hard until its warm, it won't let you but in over 2 years I have never seen this message. When they are cold they just short shift preventing you going into the higher rev range.

Well done on your choice of car.
I have never seen that warning either.
Get it scanned and see what codes come up, then go from there.

When you fire it up, are you by chance hitting the gas and the engine revving high?

Nope, foot on brake, key in ignition, push it in to start, fires up then warning light comes on. I let the car cool down completely from my drive earlier, started it up again tonight, no warning light. Seems like a computer or sensor fault. Need to get it on diagnostics. It had a major service before handover so surprised nothing was flagged up.

OK, just checking a possibility of the car protecting myself - was on the verge of trying to emulate it with mine if you had said yes..

Other thought it is a warning that could be added using coding by a previous owner?

If it was coding added by previous owner surely it would come up every time the engine is started? I can't help but feel that sometimes at traffic lights it feels as if it is running quite "lumpy" the gearbox also can jolt quite suddenly when auto shifting down when approaching standstill. Not sure if these are normal characteristics or not...

A quick google on the same issue almost always ends up at the oil pressure sensor or switch. A quick scan will reveal any codes but if still in main dealer warranty I would pop it in to get it checked.

If the gearbox jolts, there is a software update which fixes. I had it done after two occasions of sudden lurch forward after stopping at traffic lights after 30 min drive and it sorted it out, made gearbox a lot better. good way to tell if it's had it done is nose down a slope, select reverse, if the car rolls forward briefly (I.e makes you feel a bit uncomfortable) before moving backwards, then it's the crappy software.

Car has just been picked up by dealer to be looked at.

They think they know what is causing the warning light to come on and when I said about new software for the DSG box, they also acknowledged that and said yes there is a newer software available which should cure that, apparently SQ5's suffer from it badly.

Thanks very much everyone for your help. It has been gone an hour and I already miss it!!

Congrats on the new car, hopefully just a small niggle and you'll be back up and running in no time.
