novice vagcom

i dont have VAG-COM myself,but my missus cousin has it,he is a mechanic but is used to working on volkswagens,instead of paying stealers rates for diagnostics,would i be safe asking him to do my rs4 b5,if i have problems in the future.can he balls anything up for instance if he is not familiar with using such equipment,on such a high performance car,i do no he remaps diesels.any advice please j

Well, I suppose that he might delete fault codes that ought to be investigated and rectified..which if left unrectified could become more serious later.

There is an old saying - "Don't mess with things you don't understand" (unless you can afford to unmess it???).

He won't be doing that using VAG-COM, because VAG-COM doesn't offer re-mapping - only checking and setting some of the parameters used by the existing maps.

Not sure I'd be 100% happy letting him loose on my car ...

if he uses Vag Com on vw's and is pretty confident in himself then aslon as he does'nt delete or change anything ( its pretty straight forward ie sticking to BASIC FUNCTIONS on Vag Com) then he should be ok. saying that Vagcom is'nt all you need to do correct diagnostics . it only points you in the right direction. a scope and alot of understanding car electronics will be the only real way to fully understand what the dtc's are pointing at..
