When using Vag com to code a key, the SKC is calculated using a combination of the date and the supplied codes. Vag Tacho reads the actual SKC code. Plus all of the B5 cars can be done using the 4 digit login, not the 7digit.
This all sounds incomplete to me so I'll be steering clear for now.

If you have a B5 then you've nothing to worry about, it's only the later cars (2002 onwards I think) that will only accept the new style of dealer generated SKC. I've just sent Vag-Com a mail about using the Vag-TACHO supplied codes on a newer car, I'll keep you posted.

Look at it this way, if you own a B5 car, £25 as a one off payment is much better than paying the stealers between 1/2 and 1 hours labour everytime you need a key coding, or god knows how much if you needed to change an ECU/Cluster.

"There is no need to use the 7 digit SKC dialog if you have the 4 digit PIN" - Straight from Vag-Com

Later B5 S4's don't have the 4 digit PIN.

That's interesting Mikey - I've got a version of VAG-TACHO (a few years old) but I haven't been able to read my SKC from my B5 RS4 as yet - tried over 20 times as the software can be a bit hit and miss in extracting the codes from clusters (Successfully read the code on a mates B5 Passat and MKIV Golf though).
What version of the software are you using out of interest and have you tried it on a facelift or post 2001 B5 Audi? TIA Guy

I'm using version 2.2, I have found that if you let it connect to 'any' tacho then most of the options aren't available, but if you connect to 'VDO old' then there's no problem.

I've read the pin, coded keys and changed the mileage via Vag TACHO..... (only experimental) on both my 1998 S4 and 1999 1.8Tq. I have also logged in to the immob and coded keys with Vag COM using the Vag TACHO supplied pin. I have also done all of this on my 2001 Seat Leon tdi.
