Brake light switches are common failures I believe. Cheap and easy to fix.

Popular issue on the MKIV Golf and the 4Mo guys gets the same Haldex errors as you.

Certainly worth trying it first. Don't be fooled by working brake lights, they are dual circuit.

I'd suggest having your car looked at, the engine side of things looks really bad.
