Beta 702 is out

Post by MarkB » Wed Mar 07, 2007 9:33 am

I've just noticed Beta 702 is out. It has a handy function of being able to save a set of advanced measuring blocks. Something I've been wanting!

The only thing I'm worried about is the fact it requires a firmware update that isn't compatible with the old version. So I assume you will have to continue using the beta until the full release version is out

Actually, there's lots of new goodies in there Mark - well spotted

However, it says "Required for Vista 64" and "Recommended for Vista 32" - presumably it will run on XP OK?

I'm running 607.3 on Vista without problems.

Think I'll stick with that until there's a 7xx non-Beta - because of the loss of backward compatibility.

I'm probably going to do the same if that's the case

Me too - seems logical.

I wonder if Uwe can add anything?

We've had hundreds of people download the Beta and no reports of major problems. There have been some minor issues, all fixed very quickly which is why the current version is 702.2.

Anyway, I think it's reasonably safe to use. But it is a Beta and whether any individual decides to use it is completely up to him -- Release 607.3 will continue to be fully supported until 7xx is becomes a full Release.

Many thanks for your prompt input Uwe

Is the firmware update a one way thing (ie irreversible)?

But the lead has firmware in it to act as the key

Thanks Mark

Yes, the "dongle" in the Ross-Tech cable has firmware which, amongst other things, validates the Vagcom software licence.

Release 7 apparently updates the firmware in the dongle.

The firmware does a lot more than just the licensing. It buffers data, it converts data to CAN format, etc.

Since 702 is now up to 702.3 I'm going to take the plunge and start using it.

I always get nervous about version 1 of any software, especially when I lose backwards compatibility. But I'm happy to join the VAG-COM beta testers now.

I feel the need to use it for the reason I mentioned at the start. Uwe says it seems to be OK so thats OK with me :)

It was a combination of Uwe's words and the speed that Ross-Tech fixed a problem that Craigyb found that convinced me.

Words AND deeds!
