RS4 Ceramic Brakes-Rotors don't fit

Post by paku » Mon Dec 21, 2009 5:25 pm

Hello,
I've been lurking here for some time and have received good information. I thought those with the ceramic brakes can answer my question. I got my hands on an OEM RS4 Ceramic Brake Package (cailpers & rotors). When installing, the rotors don't fit. They will actually go in too far and will touch the struts. Am I missing a part? It seems a hub spacer can correct this problem, but are they available for an RS4? Thanks in advance.

I was looking into the discs and sourced some information, hope this is of some use.

The part number: 8E0 098 203 - at a retail price of £6,167.46

What is in the box? The kit contains:
8E0 615 107 A - Brembo 6-pot monobloc caliper, left
8E0 615 108 A - Brembo 6-pot monobloc caliper, right
4E0 698 151 G - brake pad set
8E0 615 437 - contact set (pad wear sensors)
8E0 615 301 AG - SGL carbon/ceramic brake disc (complete), left
8E0 615 302 D - SGL carbon/ceramic brake disc (complete), right
4E0 012 251 B - tommy bar (an extra long alloy wheel assist spigot - replaces the standard plastic one)
8E0 012 381 - instruction CD-ROM (contains PDF docs for official Type Approval certification, and instructions to recode the PR number of the car)

According to my Audi Tech, you will also have to set it up using VAG-COM. the ABS will have to be calibrated to the wipers (so break pads pulsate in the wet when wiper arms activated).
Money can't buy you love, but it can buy you a well sorted racecar

RS4 Ceramic Brakes-Rotors don't fit

Post by paku » Mon Dec 21, 2009 11:22 pm

Thanks for the reply Sonny. I believe I have all the parts save two. I tried to order the Instruction CD-ROM from the dealer but they cannot order European parts (I'm in the US). I'm just not sure about one part: 4E0 012 251 B - tommy bar (an extra long alloy wheel assist spigot - replaces the standard plastic one). I don't know what this is and I'm fairly sure I don't have it. Does anybody know what I need to install these rotors? Thanks.

The tommy bar is not required for installation

This is just to assist removal of the wheel, so you don't touch or ruin the carbon disc.

Thanks for the info on the tommy bar. Do you know why the rotors will not fit? Can you source the CD-ROM and ship to the US? Thanks.

stock suspension?
I don't mean to be flippant, but are you mounting them the correct direction (inside/outside)?

RS4 Ceramic Brakes-Rotors don't fit

Post by paku » Thu Dec 24, 2009 2:24 am

Hello Arthur. I have the Stasis Motorsport suspension (highly recomend). I have confidence in the shop installing the brakes. My family has been using them for over 20 years. It should be fairly obvious which side of the rotor faces outwards because of the hats. I'll have more info when I receive the Instruction CD-ROM.

my guess, the suspension is different dimensions than oem, hence the interference

anybody on here with the ceramic rotors and aftermarket suspension?

I ask about the facing direction because I once installed an e46 M3 clutch disc backwards (I know, I'm a dummy :D), it fits on the splines either way, but one side extends further and it looks the same but there is a very small difference, mm's...I only discovered this after reassembly and heard a squealing sound...after tearing it down again I noticed the disc is marked 'facing engine' in German....a real 'learning experience' lol

luckily no damage to the clutch, rear seal or pilot bearing...

iirc something like 'nach motor', but honestly, it's episode I'd rather forget :D

edit: just looked at the old clutch (still good, within BMW tolerance) I only changed it because the car had 110k miles on the original and a bargin was had on a used one <5k miles)
you're correct is says gearbox side in German...Getriebeseite

Good suggestion Arthur. I'll have to check with the technician and see what he thinks. I'm ordering the Instruction CD-ROM and hopefully that will give more insight as to which part(s) I need for a correct install.

My set "looks" exactly like that one. I am also eager to rectify the problem. When/if I can figure out the problem, I will let you all know. Thanks.

RS4 Ceramic Brakes-Rotors don't fit

Post by paku » Fri Jan 15, 2010 9:52 pm

Just wanted to let everyone know about the great service from Virdee Autos. I just recieved the Instruction CD-ROM from them as promised. They are also trying to source the OEM Euro RS4 seats for me. After I have time to look over the CD-ROM, i'll try to figure out why the brakes don't fit and let everybody know what I come up with. Thanks.
